Don't Top Off Your Gas Tank!

  1. Topping off the gas tank can result in your paying for gasoline that is fed back into the station's tanks because your gas tank is full.
  2. Gasoline vapors are harmful to breathe. :fuckthatshit:
  3. You need extra room in your gas tank to allow the gasoline to expand.
  4. Topping off your gas tank may foul the station's vapor recovery system.

Personally I'd only care about #1, but that's enough for me not to do it

Akinari 12-31-2012 09:18 PM

Thought this was old news

I never do it and never will. Once I saw at Bellingham a brown lady driving an ML63 fill her tank up so much it overflowed, no joke. Would've taken a picture if I wasn't already driving away.

I used to do it to some extent, and I know some people who do it all the time, to the point where you can actually see the fuel.

Just thought I'd put it out there. If you already knew this, good for you. If not, you're welcome

By topping off your gas tank, do you mean until you see the gas pretty much coming out?

Cause I usually fill up until the thing automatically stop for me.

TypeRNammer 12-31-2012 09:30 PM

Oh man all those gas hoarders at Blaine

I see it all the time :heckno:

satek 12-31-2012 09:50 PM

Too poor to fill up usually get $20-$30s worth and $40 in pt robs

LP700-4 12-31-2012 09:54 PM

By topping up you mean keep pumping after the first click of the nozzle?

Hmmm, i always do 1 more click after the initial one just to be sure its full.

Yup that's what it means

I think one more click is OK. When you keep pressing it past that click, because the gas is cheap or to hit an even price, that's when you run into the problems mentioned

So we should top up garbage bags to avoid these problems :ilied:

A trick that I found is if you have a 65 litre tank, fill 60 litre and stop. Turn the nozzle upside down, you'll be surprised at how much gasoline is left in the hose and nozzle. Probably another cup or so.

There's also a chance of damaging vapor recovery system on your own car by overfilling.
Once liquid fuel touches it from you overfilling, it's done.

#1 is not possible unless you keep filling past several shutoff clicks on the pump to the point where fuel overfills out the neck. If you're doing this, then well, you have other issues besides wasting money.
