Volunteering in the Lower Mainland

Hi guys,

I need to get some volunteer hours for graduation of highschool, but i cant seem to find any good oppurtunities that i can go do and start right away. That is the main problem as many community centers and such require extensive registration and training programs before you can actually start getting hours.

Is there anything in the lower mainland/richmond that you can just go sign up and do your hours right away? Preferrably in a group of 3 with of my buddies.

I have searched this but most threads were dating back a couple years and some like in 2005 which doesnt help.

Thanks for your replies and if you have any hook-ups then great also.

OWL in Ladner is awesome. You also get to hold and feed birds of pray which is so fun.

You can volunteer at community centres, neighborhood houses. Although,, the latter may require a criminal record check if you want to volunteer in daycares. Kiwassa is a pretty good one, although the kids are hectic. I sometimes volunteer for public dreams, but they only hold events in the fall and summer.

If you have a decent academic background/ or are good at math, you can try your high school tutorial centre.

your school doesnt give you places to volunteer at? i went to a shitty school..and even they did that lol

Look for some organizations that hold events that you might be interested in. I got a bunch of my hours with the Sun Run (stand around and check off names). And when I used to run Anime Evolution kids from high school would get volunteer hours to sit in rooms and change DVDs while watching anime.

20 hours over a weekend to sit and watch anime. What high school nerd with zero social skills wouldn't like that kind of volunteering?

Boys and Girls club, community centers, check out the career center (there should be one in most high schools) for any available openings, listen to PA announcements.

You don't need to register to do a search, just click "find events" then narrow your search.

Go to any futureshop music/software department, you'll be able to start right away. I had a group of 3 frds come in once to help stock/tidy up etc..

l2_narain 01-02-2013 08:25 PM

try neighborhood houses..they could use the help..

Question though; do work experience/career prep placement does not count as volunteer hours no more? Or it never did...can't remember..

Yup it still counts, you can do volunteer or paid jobs as long as its legit place not "working" with your parents. However im not interested in getting a job yet nor do i need one yet.

Easy.

Grab buckets and tongs, and clean up garbage on the DTES. You don't need to ask anyone to come down here and clean up. I'll even come down and cheer you guys on, maybe introduce you to some colourful characters!

Ask the music coordinator/manager, when your hours are complete they will sign the sheet for you saying you completed your hours.

Speaking of birds of pray, I was going to suggest Salvation Army.

Birds of prey, now that is way more exciting.

Sorry for being a language nazi, but I could not resist it.

Actually, that's a great idea. Revscene get together. Go down there on a Sunday morning and see how it goes. I'd be down for it. Any others wanna give it a go? I can show you guys where I spent the first 16 years of my life.

Wicked idea, but remember OP is in highschool. Needs name, signature and phone contact to prove he actually did the time.

I'd sign whatever he needs.

Besides, I was hoping for more than just one person.........

this way, I may run into a former coworker who has lost his way and ended up in the DTES. Been living there for a good 12 or so years.

find a job? start preparing for the summer you know. get hired now, you'll be making cash, you'll get the work experience hours (unless it has changed and its mandatory to be volunteer now?) and then in the summer you'll have a job already :fullofwin:

otherwise, talk to your councillor for any opportunities, craigslist also has a volunteer forum

TheKingdom2000 01-03-2013 12:30 PM

How many hours do you need?

Have you tried your school sports teams? or local churches?
