beats mixr vs pioneer hdj 2000 vs others??

So I'm planning to spent around $300 for a good pair of cans finally. Mixr and hdj2000 comes to around $250 on amazon.com. Audiophiles generally avoid the beats line but I have read very good review on the mixr by actual audiophiles. On the other hand HDJ2000 seems to be the de facto dj headphone and has good review and rep everywhere I search. I don't dj professionally but I do like to mess around on my friend's equipments and hope to one day get some gear of my own, so the dj aspect of the headphone isn't needed but would be nice. Right now I'm leaning more towards the mixr because I have read the the midrange on the hdj2000 is tune down for easier beat matching and the mixr sounds better without an amp. That and that most of the music i listen to are hip hop, trance dub step etc. Seems like mixr are intended for that type of music.

Anybody have experience in both set or maybe can recommend me another can that I might like?

I would also like to use it to occasionally watch movies with 5.1 audio on the laptop too. but music is the priority here.

Sennheiser>Pioneers > Sony > Denon > everything else > Beats. lol

I used to be a professional DJ, I would recommend the Pioneer 1000's over anything back then, but i guess nowadays it would be the 2000's. Next would be Sony MDRV1000's if they still make them, then Denon DNHP1000. Sennheiser HD-25's were if you had that extra bit of money on the top, they had/have great build quality.

Beats headphones by design are not made for djing, they are made to make people who have iPods feel like they are wearing DJ headphones. They are wildly overpriced. and sound quality is mediocre. The reason they are overpriced is that they are a fashion accessory rather than a tool. I would buy the equivalently priced Sennheiser or in your case Pioneer headphones.

Not sure where you got that bit of information from but it's untrue. All DJ headphones have the ability to run at all ranges depending on the preference and the tuning ability of the mixer itself. as for the second part of that statement, All headphones and earphone for that matter need a "headphone" amplifier to run. Amplifiers are built into all equipment like ur iPod and even DJ mixers on headphone monitor outputs.

Beats headphones are MARKETED towards music listeners in general. Any branded headphone in the 200 - 300 dollar range will be just fine. Seems like the marketing for beats headphones really worked on you, lol.

Another tried and tested thing about DJ headphones, watch in 2 years the price of your Beats headphones will depreciate greatly if you are looking to re sell them because they are a fashion accessory. The prices of DJ heaphones such as the Pioneer/Sony/Sennheiser will always hold value because they are are built what they were meant to do and not for vanity.

Have fun! =)

^ I realize the reputation of form over function for the beats series but this particular model mixr has been said to be different and finally worthy of competition. again I'm talking about mixr and mixr only.

and as for amp I meant like an external ones :)

i just pulled the gun earlier on beyerdynamics dt770 le 32ohm + schiit magni amp for $310.
i listen to trance, hardstyle, house, etc.
the 80ohm version is supposed to have more bass which is what i want, but the 32 is limited to 4000 and i got a bundle deal with the amp, oh well :P

but when i asked for recommendations, this is what i was suggested

Closed:

Beyer Custom One Pro
Beyer DT770 PRO
Ultrasone HFI 580
AudioTechnica A900X
M-Audio Q40
AKG K267
Mr Speakers Mad Dog
Denon D600

Open:

Ultrasone HFI 2400
Ultrasone PRO 2900
Beyer DT990 PRO
Hifiman HE-400

i asked for them to be $300 of below, most of these are, but some are above $300.

nabs 01-12-2013 11:50 PM

Those are great, they swivel in and out, but not right to left light DJ headphones should. They are great for just sitting and listening to music, but not great for the rugged moving, and removal, and twisting and turning a DJ headphone needs.

Go to Long & McQuade, Tom Lee and the Headphone Bar and have a listen. Don't buy headphones without listening to them. Take a MP3 player with music you have listened to lots of times. Uses different types of music some bass heavy some with great vocals. I have owned about a dozen pairs of headphones any you also want to make sure they fit your head comfortably. For your first time buying headphones I would take notes and listen to as many as you can. You might find a pair for a lot less that you like.

nabs 01-12-2013 11:52 PM

Read my first post again.. i edited it. Basically the other headphones will hold value, whereas the beats will lose value, because its a fashion accessory rather than a tool of the trade.

the other headphones i suggested have been tried and tested.

However if you are defending the Beats Mix'r so much already, it seems as though you have already made your mind, and negates the purpose of this thread.

and I agree with Manic 100% i forgot to mention that as well in my first post, Tom Lee downtown Granville... i think if its still open has a listening area for you to test the sound and comfort of most headphones on the professional market.

Unless the headphones can be charged and/or take batteries.. they all need amplification. No headphones can run without amplification.

StylinRed 01-13-2013 12:56 AM

at that price range

if you wanted something flashy and better than Beats

Sennheiser Momentum

But I read that these are even better cans, just not as flashy

^^ and that last one costs half as much as the others

as for your Mixr being better this is a review on the SQ by head-fi.org

Quote:

Sound: Like the build and style, the Mixr's sound is an attempt to make a cheaper headphone that is very similar to the Pro: Less all-consuming bass than the Solo or Studio, more mids, and less harsh highs. However, it didn't bring the clarity of the Pro along to the party. Since the $400 Pros sound about equal clarity-wise than a $125 Ultrasone HFI-580, the $250 Mixr definitely don't live up to their price range.

They sound like an on-ear XB500 with more veil, or a Klipsch Image One with a bit less bass and more mud. Soundstage is near-nonexistent, the bass is an ill-defined mess (if a quieter ill-defined mess than other models), and while the mids are more forward they still lack any detail.

Overall, they're just another ripoff courtesy of Beats Electroincs.

hdj 2000s or v-moda LP2 crossfades FTW

threezero 01-13-2013 01:53 AM

thanks yall, i have to say the mixr looks sexy and the look really attracted me, it just looks soooo sexy it takes mental power to get my mind off of it lol but I'm sure after the novelty wears off I would rather have better sounding cans for the same price. Thanks for the V-moda suggestion thats on my radar too now.

Basically I want something that has useful swivel for eventual dj usage. detachable cable, sound good with portable mp3 player built in amp (basically iPhone) but will sound amazing with a proper amp.

Does the long & mcquade in richmond have good headphone selections i can try out?

Cillu 01-13-2013 05:55 AM

V-Moda's newest headphone is the M-100 and I've heard some great things about it. You can check it out here: Crossfade M-100 - V-MODA

I personally use the M-Audio Q40s and they're very good for songs with heavy bass. I paired mine with the E11 and the bass is insane. Has pretty much all the qualities you're looking for too.

Manic! 01-13-2013 11:56 AM

Do don't need headphones that swivel for DJ use. You wear headphones how ever they feel comfortable. I use in ear when I DJ now but then I was using headphones I would just slide one cup off my ear so I could listen to the main system.

nabs 01-13-2013 12:37 PM

I only use a single cup which i hold up to my ear with my hand when I dj. I'll post a pic later, some people find it ingenious others find it funny.

B&W P5 are fantastic! my friend has them and he got me to listen to some jazz from his macbook pro. I was highly impressed.

exdee 01-13-2013 03:09 PM

nabs knows what hes talking about, for me I use pioneers because they are the industry standard for a reason and they do quite well as monitors as well

Manic! 01-13-2013 03:42 PM

Pioneers are not the industry standard. I bet more DJ's use the Sennheiser HD 25's.

Not sure where you're getting your facts but the producers that I talk to use Technics RP-DH1200 or Pioneer HDJ-1000/2000s, but those headphones are great as well

Best advice in the thread.

Also, no one has mentioned these yet:

Ultrasone DJ1 PRO - I have the DJ1 which is apparently just a rebadged HFI 580 and while it suffers in clarity, it has a well-rounded sound in that the bass hits hard and the treble sparkles nicely. I imagine the PRO will sound even better.

AiAiAi TMA-1 - My friend who DJs has this and he says it sounds good and I trust his judgment. Build-wise, it is excellent and can withstand a lot of abuse because the band is so flexible.

nabs 01-13-2013 07:25 PM

Industry standards back when I was djing was Sony MDRV1000's

I'm getting my info from other DJ's not producers. there is a big difference. Also Producers that record in studio's would not use Pioneers.

nabs 01-13-2013 07:35 PM

Studio's would not use DJ headphones... Here was my old setup for Headphones...

In House DJing (practice) - Denon DNHP1000

Club Djing - Sony MDRV1000

Producing - Sennheiser HD25

iPod - Shure In ear earphones

Yes I had/have them all and they were great for their respective jobs, lol.

jonwon 01-13-2013 08:18 PM

i would recommend the sennheiser hd-25's. theres a reason this model has lasted so long in the industry. they sound awesome, they're lightweight, comfortable, and all parts are replaceable (if they break, u only need to replace the individual piece and not the entire headphone). people just think hdj 2000's are the industry standard because pioneer sponsors so many of the top dj's (markus schulz, armin, laidback luke...). but if u look at the ones that arent backed by pioneer, probably 90% of them would be using hd 25's.

but it seems u also care about the looks of the headphone. hd 25's are not stylish at all. if looks matter that much to u, then u should grab the v-moda's. looks good and sounds better than anything monster/beats puts out. i have read reviews that the crossfade lp2's are more bassy than the m100's. they look the same, but the m100 is supposed to be the successor of the lp2's. and if u care which dj's are rocking the v-moda, avicii, chuckie and W&W are the ones that come to mind.

hi-revs 01-13-2013 08:36 PM

no issues with my AKG K81DJ, but i must admit that my Mixr's are way more comfortable to wear for long durations.

Akinari 01-13-2013 10:30 PM

If you can find a pair of Technics RP-DJ1200, get them. They're tried and true. I have a few friends who've been using them for many many years without any problems. They are very solid DJ cans with great SQ.

Might also want to give the Audio Technica ATH-PRO700 MK2 a shot.
