Whatever happened to doing a tree planting, or blood drive as a Grade 12 graduating project?
Between this and the stupid Canadian Temperance foundation ads I've been hearing on the radio, as far as I'm concerned these people can suck my ass and stop telling us how we should live our lives.

This is their "Pledge" on their website: Today, for the benefit of myself, my family, my friends and for Canada as a whole, I take the CTF Temperance Pledge:
1.I accept and will practice temperance defined as voluntary abstinence or restraint in the use of alcohol and drugs.
2.I acknowledge that the misuse of alcohol and drugs is destructive to individuals, families, and society at large, and negatively impacts physical and mental health. The misuse of alcohol and drugs is a human rights issue that can inflict physical and emotional pain, suffering, hardship and even death on the abuser and innocent members of society.
3.I acknowledge that there is a misconception that we must use alcohol and drugs to relax and have fun and that it is irresponsible and unhealthy to become intoxicated on alcohol or high on drugs.
4.I will encourage other family members, friends and fellow citizens to take the CTF Pledge.
5.I accept the principle that temperance will maximize our quality of life as individuals, as families and as a country by promoting health, safety, happiness and prosperity.
To me, it's about as preachy as religion, and undoubtedly where it gets its roots.
FYI, it was the "Women's Temperance Movement" that got prohibition to happen in the US back in the 20's.

FYI, it was the "Women's Temperance Movement" that got prohibition to happen in the US back in the 20's. | At least their "pledge" deals only with THEIR OWN actions, and at most has them ENCOURAGING (not FORCING) others to make that choice FOR THEMSELVES. There's nothing in there about trying to shut down businesses they don't agree with and in other ways fucking up other people's lives.
If someone wants to commit to a course of PERSONAL action to improve THEIR OWN lives, without ramming it down everyone else's throats or using it to negatively impact people they don't even know... I say, more power to them, whether it's this, or committing to go to the gym on a regular basis, or whatever.

You're right, they're not forcing anyone to take their "pledge".
But they sure try to sell it pretty hard when they put their ad on the radio 5 times a day.
I'm still suspicious of their motives.
The temperance movement of the 1910's didn't force anything at the beginning either, until they successfully lobbied the government to put prohibition in place, essentially forcing their ideologies on EVERYONE.

I'm with Great68 on this one. Not necessarily because of the huge numbers of advertisements (although that is somewhat bothersome) but because many of these "personal choices" tend to be turned into one of those "I'm living this lifestyle and if you aren't then that must mean you disagree with my lifestyle and we can't be friends anymore".
Honestly, if people are opposed to drinking or drugs, they can just not drink or take them. It's pledges like this that turn in to proselytic "you're wrong and I'm right" mentalities. My Aunt is a vegetarian (Buddhist convert--they're always the most zealous, you know), but she still cooks meat 'cause my uncle likes it. They both own leather of some variety or other (whoops) and so on and so forth. My Aunt didn't need to take a pledge or "affirm her lifestyle" or what have you.
This advertisement of what are and should stay personal choices is just another way of trying to show the rest of the world that you're doing what 'should be done' and everyone else isn't doing 'the right thing'. "Of course I love you even though you drink. But you know, you'd be a better person and I'd love you more if you didn't."
-edit-
And let's be real, these 'awareness campaigns' are fucking retarded. Do they really think we don't know that not drinking and/or not taking drugs is not an option? Really? I had no idea! I thought I had to drink alcohol daily OR I WOULD FUCKING DIE. Bullshit. It's just another method for people to push their personal morality on others.

Temperance <-- pfft! Thats exactly what our already up tight/conservative anglo-saxon value based culture needs here. More rules and repression. Only in North America is it that the public is up in arms over the exposure of a breast or butt-cheek somewhere in the media.
