2000 Integra GS-R won't pass Aircare Don't know much about cars but my car won't pass Aircare because of it's CAT converter. I think I'm going to have to replace it. How much for a basic one? And would I be able to replace it myself? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks! |
first off, what did you fail and by how much... gotta diagnose first! |
well check everything before changing ur cat. make sure that ur egr system is good and that put new plugs/wires in to make it run better. also a oil change wont hurt. also forgot to add that u should check ur o2 sensors because they go out with the cats most of the time |
snails: I actually did the Aircare back during last summer and thought all hope was gone and did nothing about it. I can't find my Aircare results but it had something to do with "Throttle Position" and "CAT converter....." I went to one mechanic and he said that my CAT was fried and that I'd need to replace it, quoting me about $1200 :( I really can't afford that Really sorry if that information doesn't help :P ts14: Sorry, but.. What is my egr system? Where can I get new plugs/wires? How much would they cost? And is o2 = oxygen? If so, where would I be able to check it? |
egr = exhaust gas re-circulation napa, mopac, lordco for oem replacement wires and plugs and depends what you buy, everything should be less then 100$? i assume and o2 sensor is oxygen sensor usually the sensor on your manifold |
Manifold? and hypothetically speaking, how much would it cost for a new cat converter? and would I be able to replace it myself? |
might be easiest to borrow a cat from a friend or rent one from someone, will needa be from another integra and exhaust manifold is the first stage in your exhaust coming out ur block |
Or just loosen your exhaust system so it's nice and leaky. |
So... anyone know how much a new cat converter would cost? |
A general purpose one should cost around $250 to $400 I think, then you gotta get it put on. but like the others said, you should really make sure whats wrong with the car first before throwing money at it. |
Did you fail the OBD, or the fallback driving test? Posted via RS Mobile |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought '99 plus only did ODBII test? |
can you post the results of your failed AirCare test? if you were near max on all readings or failed almost all readings, then you probably need a new cat converter. if you did well on a lot of readings, and only failed one or two readings then you can find ways to "cheat" AirCare without buying a new cat converter. if you need a new cat converter, buy a cheap one and have a muffler shop to weld/install it. I would recommend AMT machine shop, as the owner is very fairly priced. probably much cheaper than a regular muffler shop. he can help you to buy a new cat converter through Lordco (or other parts shop) as he gets a good discount. $1200 sounds like a genuine Acura converter. You can get one from lordco or napa direct fit for maybe 300 or 400. Or you can try a place like Quiet muffler and brake on Kingsway in burnaby. They do custom exhaust stuff. The odd time our shop will refer to them, cause of the cost of oem converters. Often they price out converter for what you can buy at lorcdo but installed. A 2000 car i don't think there's actual readings. I think they plug into the obd2 and check the readiness codes. My guess is your engine light was on? And you had catalyst deterioration code and TP code? |
Thanks for the info/advice so far. I've been really busy for the past couple of days but I'll take a look through my files tomorrow and see if I can find the results of the test :) |
you can find your air care results here: AirCare emissions testing program | Inspection Info - Vehicle Entry Form |

P0172 System Too Rich (Bank 1) P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) So you failed on these. Probaby need a tps. Any mods on the engine? Looks like you were running too rich and burnt the cat. So you need to look into why the engine is running rich before changing the cat. Edit: I see that you failed before, do you know what was done to get it to pass? |

And I acquired the car after the most recent pass a couple of years ago and I don't know what the previous owner did to get it to pass.. |
