I say live your life with no regrets. If they are happy spending and living a lifestyle like that and understand the consequences of their actions, good for them. Whats the point of living a frugal and simple lifestyle if you're never happy? I dunno about everyone else, but I would rather die poor and happy than rich and miserable.

^ haha! no need to show off and make it rain!

Forget about expensive handbags for wifey or gf, kid's sports, activities, vacations, and tutors drain allot of our disposable income....I am just happy to be drinking beer at Disneyland.

I have an uncle who subscribed to that ideology.
He's full of great stories about banging chicks, getting high, getting drunk, fighting, hunting, racing cars, and enough other stories to keep you entertained for the night.

He's also 74 years old, slowly dying from cancer, and is forced to drive a dumptruck for 4+ hours a week in order to pay for his rental home and living expenses. He's gone from happy go lucky, to miserable and bitter, thinking back to all the opportunities he's pissed away. I was sad the day we had that conversation.

think about it.....

i'm not saying that, I'm saying if i had to choose between the two I would choose the first. Obviously there are rich happy people and poor miserable people.

Sure i could spent decades trying to save as much money as I can, and maybe I would accumulate some wealth, but that wouldn't make me happy. I would rather go travelling, go out with friends, etc

Materialism is a motherfucker. Haha if its your own money that you grind for and you want to show it off, then you have the right to. But if you're in debt and borrowing money to do that, then its dumb. If you floss your parents' stuff (ie whips, jewelry, house) then you should be slapped in the face haha

Who says you can't do both in your 20s?

Plenty of people make good money - not mid-6 figures money - but very good money in their 20s. 70-80K. It's not hard - you just need a bit of ambition, and you need to take advantage of opportunities when you see them.

Besides, Yaletown is for people who come from the 'burbs.

Well, I saved my money for a while and lived REALLY frugally. A few years later after doing this, I walked into a dealer and bought my brand new car I ordered in cash and it was a really great feeling while having money in the bank. I currently have next to NO debt and continue living under my means. It worked well for me.

I am a car guy, having a fancy condo in downtown isn't for me. I want a place with a garage. Neither is designer clothing, or buying expensive champagne at clubs. Hell, I don't even really drink often. I do have a ton in tools. Snap-On, SK, METCO, Armstrong and so on. Probably $20k just in tools. I also did side jobs on the weekend to make extra cash. And I actually enjoy working on cars. So do my friends.

I have had plenty of memorable experiances without "breaking the bank."

Here are a couple of the car events I did...

One Lap of America
TEXAS MILE // OFFICIAL SITE // 3 DAYS, 1 MILE: NO SPEED LIMIT
Silver State Classic Challenge Inc. (I did the unlimited class. Average speed for me 184MPH)

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
Road Atlanta - Recognized as one the world’s best road courses

I made a ton of friends during those events, had a ton of fun. And got to see America. But hey, if you spend money on designer clothing and spend your entire paycheque every month...whatever. I am not paying for it, so I don't care. But IMO, it is a little reckless and will bite you in the future.

i've already seen enough rich execs in my short career to know what sucess most often looks like. These guys don't phase me. Rather when i see a guy with white hair, sitting with his wife, ordering whatever food he wants and drinking wine i probably have never heard of, humbly and to himself...that to me is rich. And happy. Which is far more admirable.

Nowadays we have become a spending culture

cell phone plans are now at least $50 with a data plan
facebook helps amplify the "keeping up with the jones" thinking
low interest rates making people take out loans or buy cars
spending addiction became an actual medical problem
people would rather spend on a new car part instead of contributing to their TFSA
won't leave "the best city in Canada" to earn better pay elsewhere
blames the "chinese" and Vancouver's real estate for their money problems
etc

scary times are coming when the interest rates goes up.

^ take away the historically low interest rates and the ease to get credit and most of the nice cars and condos would go away

I think the whole FML mantra is going way to far.....most young people who spend beyond their means are going to fucked later in life!

because for some reason people have it in their minds that money doesn't buy happiness when it clearly does.

I personally know a guy who's credit is so f-ed up he pays the sketchy car dealership manager 15k just to put the M3 in the manager's name so he can lease it.

Given what he does for a living is not exactly legit....

Read halfway and already knew this was written by a woman.

Why do men spend beyond their means to appear like they're rich?

Because women.

I'm not saying I agree with anyone. I'm just saying it's fucking stupid for the woman that wrote this article to wonder why men do this. If she's going to stereotype men, then why not talk about the gold diggers that would only go for guys like this, spend all their money and get all pissed when he runs out.

Fact: Majority of the younger generation nowadays have no urgency to save or to keep a clean credit score because frankly they don't give a damn. Their motto in life right now is "I need to live and spend lavishly because I deserve it" without putting in the work.

Anyone can charge their wants to a credit card without anyone knowing how much in debt they are. But it won't matter because they portray the "money aint a thang," mantra and they love the attention.

In an asian family, the uncle would be cared for by the younger members of the family.

Didn't you say you have a 6,000 square foot house? No spare wing/basement suite for your own uncle???

Then again, he made his bed!

Thank social media. Kids feel the need to show the world every bloody thing they do online now. In reality, how many people actually give a fuck.
