HRSDC loses nonencrypted hard drive with sensitive info, Class action lawsuit ensues

HRSDC dun goof'd

edit; affects all students in Canada with student loans, call 1-866-885-1866 to see if your information has been compromised (via El_Bastardo)

Basically the HRSDC holds sensitive info like SIN, loan balances, addresses, etc. for people with student loans. They lost a hard drive with over 580,000 student's info which was not encrypted.
They are offering free credit monitoring through equifax for six years.
People are pissed so they are suing.

Victims of HRSDC student loan privacy breach banding together and fighting back | Toronto Star

Quote:

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) discovered last November that an external, non-encrypted hard drive containing the social insurance numbers, names, birth dates, addresses and student loan balances of about 583,000 people had gone missing.
The hard drive also contained personal contact information for about 250 HRSDC employees.
The government notified the federal privacy commissioner — whose office is investigating the incident — and referred the matter to the RCMP before telling the public about it on Jan. 11.

the govt. has been losing a lot of personal information lately there was a usb stick with a lot of info lost as well

i expect more sinister reasons than simply "misplacing" this info though

i imagine some employees decided to steal the info to sell etc

nabs 02-04-2013 06:11 PM

how do i find out if my name was on the list?

El Bastardo 02-04-2013 06:12 PM

It affects us. I'm on the list, so is my friend. Both B.C. students

Call 1-866-885-1866 to find out if you're on the list. Be nice to them. They're only call center people. They have to read the script all damn day and I can imagine they've gotten yelled at more than a couple of times.

Its not their fault.

AVS_Racing 02-04-2013 06:33 PM

So what can you do? or what will they do about it if you are on the list?

Nothing, that's why people are suing them

z3german 02-04-2013 07:25 PM

7 years later,

"580,000 peoples information have been made public"

bloodmack 02-04-2013 07:45 PM

wow, will be calling tomorrow.. as if i don't have enough problems..

z3german 02-04-2013 08:02 PM

Note that Im pretty sure it only affects people with loans that started in 2000-2006

bloodmack 02-04-2013 08:06 PM

i got mine in 07, if thats the case. Thank god. haha

Akinari 02-04-2013 08:39 PM

Well fuck, I better give them a call tomorrow.

I love how they're being awfully quiet about such a big issue.

Razor Ramon HG 02-04-2013 11:05 PM

Hey, I'm just glad they went public about this. Often times something big like this, you'd expect a coverup from the government.

Gridlock 02-05-2013 09:13 AM

Just called(thanks guys!) and found out that my information was on the list.

Like so many things in life, I now sit and hope that the government that caused the issue will solve it, as there really isn't anything else I can do-until in 15 years the results of the class action suit divides a 1 million settlement between 580k plaintiffs and I get a check for 2 bucks in the mail.

Szeto 02-05-2013 09:16 AM

i have a feeling i am on the list... if the affected are in range of 02-06...

svelt 02-05-2013 10:51 PM

Seems like I'm likely on that list then, will be calling tomorrow or the day after.

yogenfruz 02-05-2013 11:09 PM

Well, time to make a phone call in the morning.

You're not affected. Unless you somehow attended post-secondary/got a student loan while you were in elementary lol

TVD 02-06-2013 08:47 PM

Oh geez, I got a letter from them :failed:. This really sucks.

E-40six 02-06-2013 08:56 PM

I just got a letter from them saying my info was on that harddrive also :(

twitchyzero 02-06-2013 09:19 PM
