Thanks to everyone for the help! What cars do people usually drive? and I have a 350 hp RX7.

Traum 02-18-2013 05:30 PM

For the most part, I'd still say that the majority of cars at the autox are Hondas (Civics of all kinds and S2k) and Mazdas (Miatas of all generations and some Mazda3's), with Subarus also being quite common in the winter series. That is not to say there aren't other cars. From Corollas (not the Hachi Roku) to Porsches to GTRs, basically if you see them on road, there is a good chance you'll see them at the autox.

Also, you have probably heard this before, but horsepower isn't super important in autox. That is not to say it is not important -- it certainly is. But driver skill is the #1 determining factor. Additionally, I would also say tires and suspension tuning place higher up the list than horsepower as well.

roastpuff 02-18-2013 05:39 PM

^ What Traum said. Some of the fastest people I've seen - the Yeung brothers - drive a stock Mini Cooper (non-S, so 112hp) with fat tires and post incredible raw times, before they even get indexed. Technique is the most important part of autocross.

gars 02-18-2013 07:48 PM

I found at UBCSCC, a lot more FRS (and one BRZ) are coming out - which I think is good. You kinda get tired of the same Miatas after a while.... not that they're not awesome.

If you get a chance to go for a ride in some of the cars that people bring in, do it. Ask politely, and most people will let you come for a ride. I still remember being in a Lotus Elise with Racing Compound tires... Maybe it's because there's nothing to hold onto inside the car, but I don't think I've ever felt that many lateral G's in anything else...

?uestlove 02-18-2013 08:11 PM

man i'm getting an auto x boner already. i'm definitely doing this once my crx is done!

Rich Sandor 02-18-2013 09:12 PM

The nice guys at the Porsche Club autocrosses also allow non-Porsches to run. :)

Just remember everyone, exhaust and tire noise is a serious issue we have to contend with and we take it very seriously.

Don't be offended if you are approached about a load exhaust or over-driving causing too much tire squeal. Please co-operate so we can all continue to enjoy the facility.

perfectly acceptable at autox even without roll bars, only track events require roll bars

JimFarcus 02-19-2013 05:29 AM

When does the UBCSCC start their non slush series events?

T2Small 02-19-2013 08:42 AM

If any of you come over to the Island, Victoria Motorsports Club runs events too. Our next event is Sunday March 3rd at Western Speedway. Check out vmsc.ca or our Facebook page for more info.

It'll probably be some time in April or May (April might conflict with Exam dates, seeing that UBCSCC is a UBC club). Nothing has been set yet though.

man, my windshield has more area cracked than not, tires are old and are off all different makes and sizes, and are very bald. It is a no brainer that I would fail tech. However If I enter and fail do I get the money refunded? I am not saying I am going to enter and go through all this just curious if you fail for an issue you would not think of.

Another question, you guys must have helmets that can be rented or used?

I am going to try and auto x as much as possible this year. I need to start figuring this all out.

I am going to be in town this weekend and seen this event and instantly knew I had to enter my 97 integra LS bone stock with 360 000ks on it but tech would rip it to pieces. No handbrake either and 3 of the 4 calipers are currently working.:failed:

gars 02-21-2013 07:05 PM

I don't think they would refund you, but if you speak to the club execs, and they might credit you for a future event. Don't quote me on that though - but if you speak nicely to the execs, I could see this happening.

They have helmets you can borrow there. I hope your Integra isn't the car with cracks all over it....

Shafto 02-21-2013 07:29 PM

I live in the interior so I doubt you have seen my DD, but it is definitely a beast:

I would love to add auto x to its bucket list but I know it would waste techs time. I have another integra that is not my DD that I am planning on running this year. Not quite car season though.

it would definately fail tech according to your description. We usually give credits for future events. But you can post up on our forums, asking to be a co-driver for someone. still come along for many ride alongs. I had to fail a very good member's car last time, due to a hood latch not working. which is another thing you can fail tech for is loose body panels.

spoonek4 02-23-2013 04:40 PM

who's gonna go check out or participate in the slush event tomorrow?

jaemc 02-24-2013 08:42 PM

Shafto 02-25-2013 07:20 AM

gars 02-25-2013 02:23 PM

Honestly, I actually brought my camera out, but it was just so miserable out that on my break, I just sat and slept in my car.

Looks fun!

So nice to see that the frs/brz/gt86 is doing so well. A car that doesnt care about the magazines figures. Hopefully this will make nissan bring something back which is already kinda known, and honda.

legin_k 02-28-2013 06:23 PM

Nice pics Spoon! Yeah, it was a bit damp :P

Here's what it looked like from onboard my run in that S2000

The grey STi, which took the fastest time of the day

And the silver 2.5RS, which actually got the quickest Indexed time of the day - that's the fastest time when adjusting for the class of the car

If you're new to autocross.. don't worry, the course is a lot easier to follow when you're actually there and you've done some walk-arounds.

Driving in the wet is pretty fun, but hopefully it'll be a bit less damp this time. It really should be called the UBCSCC Rain Series :)

Next event is March 10th. Signup info is here: UBCSCC Slush Series #7 - Sun, Mar 10th, 2013 [Double Pad]

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 05:59 AM.
