Hundreds of Burnaby residents were evacuated Monday after police found explosives inside a highrise condo.
Mounties had earlier executed a search warrant in an 11th floor suite in the 4200 block Grange Street. They found several kilos of cocaine, guns, cash and 10 sticks of dynamite in a bag.
"It was crystallized dynamite which means it is very unstable," said Burnaby RCMP Insp. Tim Shields.
The explosives disposal unit attended the scene and soaked the dynamite in diesel fuel to render it neutral. It was later burned in Central Park.
Police also had to make sure there was no additional explosives inside two locked safes in the unit before letting residents — who were given refuge from the cold at the nearby Bonsor Recreation Centre — to return to their homes.
No arrests have been made. Police said the vacant unit appeared to be a drug packaging centre.
Resident Karim Seddik was alarmed when he came home to find his building behind police tape.
"I'm worried," he said of the explosives found in the 30-storey building.
He said police had been calm and helpful but, at around 10:30pm, he said he hoped he, his wife and two kids, age seven and four, could return home soon.
"We feel tired and the kids want to sleep."
