Was talking to my dad about it last night and apparently prices this year are more expensive? $20/lb!!? Long gone are the days of $13.99/lb I guess....
Anyways, we always go to Gingeri for our king crab meals. And most restaurants are starting this weekend for king crab!

Never understood why people spend top dollars for King Crab. For nearly $20 per pound, you're paying mostly for shell than meat. The meat is good, but not worth what they charge. For nearly $250, you can go to Black + Blue fine dining restaurant and order a 20oz. Australian Wagyu steak or you can go to a Japanese Meat Shop, and buy in greater quantity. Bring it home. lightly sear both sides, put several thin slices on top of Japanese rice seasoned with mayo, sugar and rice vinegar, then top it off with Ikura (Salmon Eggs). Heaven.

you gotta pay to play. its 20 dollars per pound because it is really difficult to catch and has to be flown in live. and besides you can have steak anytime king crab is seasonal. Quote:

I agree, I find Steak to be something I would NOT spend big bucks on.
anything over 50 is too much for me.
its beef at the end of the day, just a piece of meat.

Try walking into Superstore and buy a pack of AA NY Striploin then walk across the street to Costco and grab a family pack of Prime-grade NY Striploin steak. Prepare both steaks the same way.
World of a difference, my friend.

Anyway, I'm gonna end it here. I don't want this to become a beef vs crab debate.

Then again, maybe it's just because there's so little meat.

i can't shit on anyone cause some people spend 100 on a bottle of wine, some spend 60 dollars on piece of steak and some spend it on king crab.
to be, I much rather pay for something that needs to be cooked, prepped properly or takes some type of skill.
Oysters are ranked the lowest for me, won't go into detail but you get where I'm coming from.
oh wait, stone grill is worth the LOWEST for me. i much rather go home and do it.
As for steak and king crab, it's totally different. steak is steak, you can always CUT the particular area of a cow and you can both age it the same amount of days. It boils down to the rub and the # of minutes you grill it.
For king crab, it's night and day when you compare the way they make it. |

$100 per pound you wont eat more than a pound...
king crab 20x10lb = 200
avg 7-10lbs per crab
theres no debate beef and crab so diff. Quote:

Please do remember that the prices you are quoting are not entirely accurate.
The $20/lb price for king crab is with the shell.
The price per lb should rocket up at least 4x the price when you talk about just the meat alone.
In this case, since it's seasonal, and King Crab is rather unique and yummy, I say to each his own.

Same thing for beef, you're paying for 16 oz or 48 oz BEFORE it was cooked

King crab prices have shot through the roof because... <drum roll> ... Demand for it from Mainland China has skyrocketed in the past few years, and they are willing to pay top dollars for it. If you are the seller, are you gonna sell to Mainland Chinese market for big $$, or are you gonna sell it to the locals for $10/lbs?
At least we have been enjoying a good harvest (driving down prices) on lobsters this year.

Oysters are so cheap, some place you can get a Oyster for a dollar each which is a pretty good deal considering it is downtown.

LOL, pathetic.
People are comparing steak and crab?
Sooner or later people are gonna start a debate here saying $1.69 for a burger at McDonalds and it's still gonna fill you up regardless.... rather spend $10 and buy a bunch of burgers and fill yourself up then spend more money to fill you up. Either outcome you are gonna get filled up.
