Why seize their phone?

If they catch them texting and driving, just suspend their drivers license for a day. Thats more effective in my opinion.

this is what happened to me when I was rear ended by a texter =(

wow that's quite a hit. are you ok? I was hit in similar circumstances and the whiplash was brutal.

Graeme S 03-10-2013 02:57 PM

That's quite a bit of damage, especially for a Volvo. Ouch.

The province isn’t supporting the controversial idea from The BC Chiefs of Police Association to seize phones of people who get caught using them while behind the wheel.
Quote:

BC’s Justice Minister Shirley Bond doesn’t think that’s a good solution for now. “I’m certainly not considering the seizure of cell phones. I am concerned though that we continue to see distracted driving as a major issue in our province. It’s not unlike seatbelts, it took a long time for people in our province to make that a normal habit.”

That's good to hear :)

I think the best way to handle people texting and driving is to keep things the way they are, but allow device handling when at a red light.

then you will have people that dont go on when the changes from red to green cuz they are too busy texting,

what they should do is have an increasing fine and points, fine goes up everytime you get busted

mac25 03-11-2013 08:22 PM

well we are all car enthusiasts here and i'd like to think we are all decent drivers. but you have to remember some people can hardly handle a car while just driving and some of these people also try to text or check facebook or tweet while driving.

i can understand using the phone as a phone while driving, that's just like talking to a buddy in the car, but anything that draws your eyes off the road continuously is risky.

they could make it a second offense penalty.

Matlock 03-11-2013 08:22 PM

Hit by a texter? I don't know if I would be able to not kill the moron.

I yell at people if I see them texting or talking on the phone while driving.

Jegz 03-11-2013 09:49 PM

I sometimes eat holding a plate with my left hand and a fork in the other hand, text in between and drive with my knee. Still drive better than half of richmond. Police should ban c lais

Graeme S 03-11-2013 10:04 PM

ITT: Confess to terrible driving habits that haven't gotten you killed.

Yet.

I think the police just have no consistency. Some police catch people using their phones and driving religiously, while others tend to disregard them and that's what makes people mad and feel like they can get away with it.

You'll be driving on the highway or something, and see a guy having a very long phone call, or typing a long text when he almost merges into your lane by accident; you'll be peeved that he's using his phone, and then a police will pull you over for speeding 5km/hr over the speed limit.

At least for me, that's what pisses me off the most about the stupid rules and the bad apples in the police force. Most of the rules that they make have a legitimate reason as to why they impose it, but how they inconsistently enforce these rules is what presses my buttons.

They also have to realize, that you can't really "enforce" all things that distract drivers, and that's probably why they have targeted cell phones. Imagine if they tried targeting things like eating, or drinking, or picking up a baby bottle that your baby threw, or adjusting the radio. These all cause accidents, just as much as talking on your cellphone. Bluetooths don't really help either, because at the end of the day it's about being distracted, and having a conversation while driving for some, is an extremely difficult task.

Splinter 03-12-2013 09:03 PM

And what a lot of people don't understand is that having a conversation with a passenger is NOT the same as having a conversation with a person on a cellphone. A passenger can see hazardous situations and break off the conversation accordingly, or even alert the driver to something they haven't noticed

A person on a bluetooth will just keep jabbering away til you tell them to shut up.

I dont know what it is...it's like people talking on their phone get so caught up in their convo they kinda forget their surroundings...ie driving below speed limit...not shoulder checking etc

whereas that doesn't really seem to happen if you are carrying a conversation with someone in the passenger seats.

what bc police should have is a snitch website, send the picture of the offenders licence plate with a picture of them on the phone and ticket the registered owner like they do with the red light cameras, if the RO doesnt want to pay, then they will have to snitch on the real culprit

with dash cams gaining in popularity, we should be able to submit videos of people running red lights or performing u-turns if you can catch them in the act, get a clear licence plate and have the RO get a ticket for whatever was done

Disagree. That's a little too 1984 for my tastes.

I'm not sure if I'm following you.. So we should report people that are using their cellphone while driving, by using our cellphones while driving to take a picture of them..
