This is just fucking horrible. Anyone know what the deal is with this Mainlander "paper" that I'm reading? The Mainlander | ?Cuchillo? Restaurant: Another knife in the heart of the Downtown Eastside | Part II
"Cuchillo hawks a modernized “Anglophone” amalgamation of assimilated “pan-Latin” cuisine, cocktails, art and architecture, created for the palates of Vancouver’s most privileged. Those who can afford it are invited to experience an exoticized dining experience, and to revel in a gentrifying lifestyle in the “dangerous” underbelly of the Downtown Eastside. It’s a tiki bar for the 21st century."
Honey, "stop" with the "quotes" like its not "food".

I swear there's CiC somewhere in the comments for those articles. So much leftist bullshit coming from what are likely third year philosophy students from UBC. Those articles are so slanted to extreme liberalism that even I hate them despite being supportive fundamentally. Posted via RS Mobile |

Some pretty high ideals there that she's ascribing to people who don't even know enough not to stumble across Hastings when a bus is bearing down...

This is the manifesto against the Cuchilo restaurant.
I'm torn. I mean, Miss Rose Colored Glasses here seems to describe a sense of community to the area that I just don't see. And maybe I'm wrong...maybe this restaurant is being used to prop up the values of the building owners real estate holdings. And maybe Vancouver doesn't need yet another trendy area where the same 10 developers build condos over whatever was there.
But maybe they can be wrong too? Maybe its not a sense of community. Maybe its a sense of desperation passing itself off as community. Maybe in between asking for social housing, and increased welfare rates and more insites and all these things that can be handed out...maybe a little bit they can ask for a hand up too?
This article is frustrating to me on multiple levels.
This one: Activists, Anarchists, Arson, Political Theatre And Mayor Gregor Robertson's Peter Principle... | genuiNEWitty
Interesting look at how the hell we have gotten here and how these same core group of protesters have been involved over and over again. | Fuck, I'm not torn about it. I said it earlier in this thread, and I'll say it again: The are surrounding Pigeon Park, nay, the DTES, used to be the central shopping hub of Vancouver. It used to be the Robson Street, the Granville Street, of it's day. Many major companies were based in the area and everyone came to the area to do their shopping. It wasn't until Woodward's shut down that the area began to experience an upswing in prostitution and drug dealing. Those trades further degraded the area, causing existing shoppers to find safer areas to buy their goods. As a result, most stores close up and because of all the negative shit happening, property owners found it hard to rent out their empty buildings.
It's not that we're taking away this place from the prostitutes, the drug dealers, and the transients... it's that we're trying to reclaim what was once the thriving central hub of old Vancouver.

I love how these protesters are trying to preserve the history of this area as if the history of the area is low-income living, hookers, and crackheads.
The area did not start to turn into the city dump until the mid to late 70s. In the 1970s the store front vacancy was 4%....in the early 2000s it was 68%. Business moved out and drugs moved in. We are only talking about roughly 25 years of "history" and "right to the area" that these dicks are trying to "save".
Do we really need to save this: 8f494e78ad92b9c122ad3bfb1b03f215.jpg 1554108762_71b4580bfa.jpg

It's not that we're taking away this place from the prostitutes, the drug dealers, and the transients... it's that we're trying to reclaim what was once the thriving central hub of old Vancouver. | Honestly, those two mainlander, sorry..."mainlander" "articles" that I posted ( ) really blew me away on the stupidity. The comments though on the second one about CuChillo actually impressed me where even their readers are calling the authors idiots.
One comment talks specifically about drugs and prostitution. You are campaigning against a restaurant ruining your neighborhood while across the street, women are selling themselves to pay off the bill for the heroin dealer.
I have no problem with a peaceful protest. I don't think you should be able to interfere with a business for sure. But protest the whole system! Not only do you not care to protest the drugs...half of your protesters belong to VANDU...which, and this can only be in Vancouver, really, you have to hate this city just a little bit for this..the association of drug users that campaign for a live and let live attitude for addicts. Obviously I do NOT want to get into a war on drugs thing here, but maybe there can be a happy medium between jail and saying "fuck it, enjoy heroin!"
From the VANDU manifesto I read last night:, "We are survivors of the drug war. We are current and former users of illicit drugs. We are people who have had our human rights and dignity violated, our children taken away and have been criminalized and incarcerated because we use drugs. We are a community of people who stand up for each other and stand up for the rights of drug users."
These are, apparently, some of the people that are connected with these protests. Some others apparently are linking with some Carnegie Community Action Group which gets money from Vancity Credit Union...which makes me think a little bit that some more research on that organzation is needed.
And then we need our own campaign to ask Vancity to stop funding these assholes.

I personally want to see the DTES be fixed. For sure, and I've talked about this before, that you can't have a healing of people when you are surrounded by that much misery.
I also don't want to see it bulldozed without solutions. Honestly, with the developers we have, and the money they have access to...the DTES could be a parking lot in days. That's not going to be a solution for the people there.
But somehow, the fact that those pictures are someone's normal is a problem. The protesters are under the idea that pouring MORE money in will solve it...and it won't. If you are looking for a free reign to do drugs..then money isn't the problem. We cannot move forward with a war on drugs mentality anymore than we can move forward with a freedom for drugs mentality.
You know how they say that you can't negotiate with terrorists? I personally refuse to negotiate with addicts.

| Or live and let die, as the case may be? Because really, if they want "live and let live" for the users, then they should be againt Insite's interference with the natural course of Darwinism.

Fun aside: VANDU actually has a board of directors...only half of whom can be clean at any time (in order to ensure proper representation by the groups affected).
So if you get clean...you lose your job.

Read the manifesto. It's "interesting".
Of course, we, sorry the collective all of us we, aren't doing enough to obviously provide homes, and quality health care and we get on them about the drug use. So they have a group to promote that they need better housing, better health care and they should be provided drugs that are clean and safe.
Fucking sign me up, bitch!
