Been getting into bourbons as well. Currently loving Stagg Jr and WT 101.

High proof is awesome!

haha yes I agree! I haven't opened my Stagg Jr, but soon hopefully. Give Rare Breed a try its WT101 amped up; same distillery and 116 proof.

Skinnypupp: Try WT101, higher proof kind of stands up in cocktails pretty well. Usually about $30-35 CAD, definitely affordable. Don't have too many liqueurs though. Only enough to make an old fashioned, manhattan, and negroni/boulevardier.

Raiden: How's the Miyagikyo?

I picked up some Wild Turkey 101 at duty free (remember those?) but I didn't like it. A bit too much rye spice for a bourbon IMO. Made for some really weird cocktails where you're looking for that mellow sweet corn bourbon flavour.

Bender Unit: nice, got one as well lol.

Skinnypupp: Can I assume this was awhile ago? Say pre 2018?

Nope it would have been last year! But it was from Japan which IIRC is the only region that puts an age statement (8 years I think)

I think for cocktails, especially if making classics, you want the most 'basic' bourbon possible. Once it starts adding new flavours, it can mess with the balance. Sometimes in a good way, but not in my experience with this bottle.

700 ml bottle costs $47 USD locally so I don't think I'll be trying it again... The stuff I buy is $30 for 1L and is 90 proof, I think it's perfect for my uses. I'd love to try some other 100 proof some time though.

tbh, of the three i liked it the least. though i still have some other ways i have yet to try it. so far just neat at room temp and mixed. mixed it was okay though nothing special, neat it didn't have much flavour, just the alcohol burn. though that might be partly due to the glassware.. i need to get some proper glasses i think. haven't tried it with ice or water yet though. the fujisan was better, and the glenfiddich is good.

Is there gonna be another shortage? lol

bcrdukes 09-17-2020 08:15 AM

Sold out / back ordered / shortage / COVID-19 - you name it. :D

Expresso 09-17-2020 09:11 AM

Pretty sure the GVRD stock was cleared out by all the staff lol. It disappeared less than a day.

I've heard good things about this though and the fact its cask strength is intriguing. AP used to supply juice for Whistle Pig and people go crazy over that.

:rukidding: 5 bottles show available in BC

in Parksville, Kelowna, Dawson Creek.....

DA9ve 09-17-2020 08:10 PM

lol i dont know how this shit gets voted best whisky. i bought a bottle when it first came out last fall and i cleared the neck pour already, just had it after 3-4 months and it still didnt open up. Fucking bottle is so rough even with liberal amounts of water to try and dilute it.

at $50-60 if you're really curious then sure. if it starts going up to $70-80, theres tons of other whiskies worth trying.

Obsideon 09-18-2020 02:05 PM

To each their own. I agree. Even last time the Crown Royal Northern Harvest got all the hype from being the "best whisky" ... I grabbed 3 bottles. Not really a fan. I mean it's not bad... but it's definitely not the best whisky by far. I haven't wanted to get a bottle since, and probably never will.

ahhh the fall/winter, time for the good stuff.

SkinnyPupp 09-27-2020 04:48 PM

Considering I picked up Weller 12 year and Antique 107 recently, that will be hard to do lol! Fall Spirits release is going to be in a month or so too!

Will do. But I really want to give poor mans pappy blend a try, mixture of both.

Did you grab the W12 from the recent spirits release?
