What about sex and relationships? Silly to think they wouldn't all be sexually frustrated knowing they will never have a new relationship. What happens when relationships go south, but you know you will have to interact with them again?

What about the people who regret their decision and go crazy, and commit murder or suicide to mentally escape? And the jobs fall on other's shoulders?

People stay on the ISS for months at a time, but know they will be back. The trip alone is several months, then they gotta settle in for the long haul.

So many possibilities. It will be so interesting to see how they pick these people.

You make it sound like Lord of the Flies. Mars edition. LOL

This one way ticket to Mars application sort of reminds me of the original "Total Recall" movie starring Schwarzenegger.

What if the first human inhabitants of Mars start to develop mutations? Remember the
three boobed lady from "Total Recall"? :hotbaby:

2 n r 04-27-2013 07:11 AM

have they discussed how they'll have a lifetime supply of food, water and electricity?
this thing has an extremely high potential for disaster and seems bogus

on a side note, if i ever went on a one way trip to mars, i'd bring porn for yearsssss lol
what would u bring?

No Internet no go.

Only time for concern is if the shuttle is built by Weyland-Yutani.

TheKingdom2000 04-27-2013 09:52 AM

You would need HUGE balls or HUGE lady parts to do this.
This is surely a suicide mission.

Could you imagine never seeing the ocean, the mountains, or pornhub again?

The people who are seriously considering this are crazy in my mind.

That's what they said about people who wanted to sail past the horizon and fall off the earth. Some people want to be Pioneers of the unknown and have their name go down in history..

exactly, even if they know they will die within the year it will be worth it for many people just to be named the first human attempt to mars

i'd imagine those people would be given a caching style view of the internet. no real time but 7 min delay instant messages

I guess it's just hard for me to comprehend the need for this. Kudos to these people! It's just not my cup of tea. Different people are different, thankfully.

Nightwalker 05-06-2013 12:52 PM

I'm going to apply.

Lomac 05-06-2013 01:11 PM

So how long before someone behind this project finds themselves in court for financial fraud?

No troll.

The problem with this argument is that sailors already knew that the world wasn't flat. They simply kept their mouths shut when the religious zealots were preaching otherwise simply because that would have been their death.

But I understand what you're getting at. :)

freakshow 05-06-2013 02:11 PM

SpaceX plans to do return trips in 12 years.. so.. maybe i'll wait for that.

if japan invents realistic human replica sex bots... manned suicide missions to any planet would have full capacity of volunteers.

that or they can just arrange for astrohookers. hookers that are astronauts.
that would solve almost every problem to do with the human psyche on these trips.

miss home?
lonely?
depressed?

no problem, ship's doctor assigns you to 3 hours of astrohooker.

rsx 05-06-2013 06:14 PM

They're probably going to drop containers full of fleshlights, dildos, lube and porn.

i wonder if contraceptives even work the same way in space? or even needed due to low gravity....

i wonder what would happen if a baby was conceived in mars/space (if that would even be possible), what are the developmental effects due to lower gravity.

rsx 05-06-2013 09:09 PM

Weaker bones and muscle could be disastrous

Is this really a problem if you were never coming back to Earth?

I think I read that you need a minimum viable population of 160 people (80 male 80 female) to repopulate with minimal inbreeding. I don't think this number factors in genetic disease, natural disasters, demographic factors, etc.
