If she were charged with a hate crime, I'd actually start protesting.

You can make a case, maybe, for assault. The spitting. It's maybe some restitution and a little community service. Still get a record though.

If that becomes hate speech, then we are ALL fucked. I do not need some government body deciding if it was ok or not that we said what we did.

That's not a priority for me.

I feel the only time that should apply is if its being broadcasted in a way I cannot avoid hearing the message, but this chick stepped outside, into the public and guess what? Maybe not everyone likes you. She may be a bigot for it, but its still her right to not like the girl. Even , as disgusting as it is, purely based on the color of her skin.

What is not her right is to hurt her.

The Cloverdale Rodeo protester who filmed another woman in the throes of a racist rant before she was allegedly beaten up and then posted it on YouTube has done this sort of thing before.

A video posted on YouTube by user shukielara1 capturing Saturday's rant went viral on the internet, leading to a Surrey RCMP investigation, front-page newspaper stories and substantial television news coverage.

Media reports highlighted the racist aspect of the confrontation, but did not mention her previous posting.

Shukria, a young Surrey mom, was protesting against the rodeo, carrying a sign that read "Rodeo...When coward boys have fun," on Saturday afternoon when she got into a confrontation with a woman who hurled racially-charged verbal abuse at her before allegedly assaulting her. On the short video, Shukria can be heard goading the other woman with comments like "Come here, hit me..."


Under the video, shukielara1 posted this message, asking viewers to help identify her alleged attacker for police:

"Cloverdale rodeo may 18/13 I was protesting the rodeo and this lady came attacked me verbally and physically, spat on me, punched me, kicked me..."

On July 11, 2012, shukielara1 posted a video of a run-in she had with another woman while walking her dog in Mud Bay Park. That video was removed from YouTube immediately after the Now interviewed Shukria by phone Wednesday morning, but not before we saved it.



That particular video carried this message: "I was walking my dogs at Mudbay park when I came across this couple walking their own dog. They started yelling at me for letting my dogs off leash. I started to walk away when they followed my yelling that he was a cop and he would arrest me showing me his batch (sic). I kept walking when his wife came after me trying to hit me. I took my phone and video taping them. He got scared because he was being recorded started to walk away but his wife wanted to fight me and beat me up. This is how they use their power as a cop. He wanted to arrest me for not having my dog on a leash but when his wife attacks me verbally and wanting to hit me all of a sudden he wants to look away."

In the Mud Bay video, which had a couple hundred views, shukielara1 can be heard saying, "This is going on YouTube."

"So you're going to fight me? You're going to beat me up?" she says to the other woman. "You want to harass me?"

The Mud Bay woman and the rodeo woman look remarkably alike, but Shukria told the Now they are different people.

She said her niece was with her Saturday when she was allegedly attacked, as was the suspect's son. She said three people beat her.

"I got kicked in the head and punched," she said. She added she has since been to see a doctor.

"It's 2013, and there's still racism out there. It's Canada and we're still dealing with this. It's upsetting."

Shukria said she turned her camera on roughly two minutes into the confrontation at the rodeo.

"I know I basically egged her on," she said of her alleged attacker. "I shouldn't have done that."

Still, she added, "She should be accountable for what she did. I hope she gets in trouble."

She said she got the idea of filming people during confrontations from the internet, where she saw a videotape that captured a police officer hitting someone.

"I think it's a good idea," she said of the practice. "At the same time, you should walk away."

Meantime, Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet confirmed that police have identified the alleged attacker in the rodeo video but by press time investigators still hadn't spoken with her yet. Asked if she'll be facing charges, Paquet said it's "too early to say."

Asked what injuries the alleged victim sustained, Paquet replied that "none that were on the report" but added that the victim sought medical attention for a "sore" head and neck pain.

Police recommend assault charges in Cloverdale Rodeo racist rant (with video -- WARNING: PROFANITY)


Surrey RCMP will recommend assault charges against the woman behind a racist rant and alleged attack outside the Cloverdale Rodeo two weeks ago.

Cpl. Bert Paquet said police have interviewed the suspect, who was caught on video spewing racist comments before allegedly assaulting an animal-rights protester. The police investigation is in its final stages, said Paquet, and when it’s complete, a summary will be provided to Crown lawyers, along with the recommendation of an assault charge.

The police officer said that while the racist comments will make up part of the information forwarded to Crown, the evidence does not suggest it was a hate crime.

After the alleged attack, the victim, Shukria, told The Province she was walking to her car when a woman threatened to beat her up because she didn’t like the anti-rodeo sign she was carrying.

She claims the woman punched, kicked and spat on her.

The woman in the video then spoke to Global B.C. and was identified as Jennifer Johansen. She agreed to speak to Global on the condition that her face wasn’t shown on camera.

Johansen claims it was the protester who attacked her first.

“I made some rude remarks and it got worse and she told me, ‘Oh, I’m not Hindu, I’m Muslim, I’m a terrorist and I’ll bomb your house,’” adding she thought the incident was a “stupid fight.”

“When I first saw [the video] I laughed, because I was so embarrassed,” she told Global B.C.

The YouTube video has received more than 126,000 views.

It shows a woman in a dark-coloured jacket and white sunglasses hurling racial slurs and profanity.

At one point she acknowledges she’s a racist and threatens to “blow your f---ing country up.”

Good it's not a hate crime. I don't want my tax dollars wasted on some huge investigation over two idiots.
