just bought a 99 4runner limited the other day

tires before winter, then start gathering parts for a lift (tundra front springs etc)

it's got a banged up front bumper so used that to get the price down so a steel bumper will be in the future

what tire are you guys running?

I'm thinking of either the AT KO2's or the duratracs but i don't think the KO2's are snow rated

will be used for going up to whistler and playing around on FSR's in the summer

blkgsr 09-20-2016 06:14 AM

never mind apparently they are snow rated...

I haven't had a chance to run the KO2s in the snow yet but they've been great for me all summer. Better on the road than the Duratracs, quiet, smooth, wearing pretty well and not too bad on fuel economy. Off road they have good control on gravel and good traction in the slick stuff. Haven't used a proper mud tire before so I don't have a comparison for you but much better than the stock SR-As as they should be.

Will update you on snow performance as soon as the white stuff falls down - I'm based out of Pemberton now so I'll be driving the Sea to Sky regularly as my GF is in Vancouver. I do have a set of Blizzak DM-V2s that I will probably switch to in mid/late October though as I think that proper winter tires still beat the KO2s even though they're snowflake approved.

blkgsr 09-22-2016 08:38 AM

you'll want winters as you'll see more snow living up there than us here. So I want a tire that's better in rain/off road and can still handle snow

i had the old KO's on my tacoma and the combo was awesome

Oh, I have winter tires - Blizzak DM-V2s are already mounted on 17" Pro Comp wheels and I did use them last winter. I just got the KO2s this summer, so no snow experience just yet. So that's why I said I'll update on them when the first snows fall, I won't be too rushed changing to the Blizzaks from the KO2s unlike the stock Goodyear SR-As which were not very good....

The KO2s have been very good in the rain, directionally very stable and I haven't hydroplaned with them though I've tried to put the truck into the deep highway puddles sometimes. Off-road has been good as well but I haven't mud bogged or done rock crawling since my stock truck wouldn't be great with them. Just mostly exploring off FSRs and on deactivated sections.

oh then you'll love the KO2's. i've had them on my f150 since the tire was first released back in 2014 and they've been great for our weather here in the lower mainland. they're awesome in the rain and really good off road as well. like roastpuff said, mine have also been wearing evenly and they're smooth and quiet. when this set finally wear's out, ill be getting another.

my buddy was telling me how much he loves his toyo open country AT2's

says to stay away from duratracs and isn't really a fan of the KO2's (they wear fast and get noisy)

It's drives a full ton diesel

Tire fanboys are a big thing in 4x4 circles haha. Lots of guys who love the Toyo OC AT2 tires but I found them to be more expensive than the KO2s which swayed me over to them. Depending on the size of truck I've found reviews that seems to say that the KO2s wear fast on anything larger than a Jeep or half-ton truck.

The OC AT2 & the Extreme versions have a good reputation as well, hard to go wrong with the top picks in the market.

blkgsr 09-24-2016 06:00 AM

ya was looking into them a bit this morning...the extremes look great but i'm seeing they're quite a bit heavier (especially for the larger sizes)

Been a busy week to keep my Frontier ready for the back roads. This week alone: I replaced the battery, changed the oil, replaced the rear leaf springs with some custom heavy duty leaves, swapped my front PIAA lights with some LEDs, then I made brackets and a plywood bottom for a roof basket that came off a Jeep and fit it onto my truck. Hunting season - bring it.

Looks like we need another adventure meet before the snow comes, anyone want to go to Squamish or Harrison East?

Zedbra 09-26-2016 05:00 PM

Come this weekend, I am gone for two weeks up north. Snow runs can be fun if you have chains.

Zed, we should meet up - I'm in Pemberton now and would love for a local to show me around if possible!

bokch0y 09-27-2016 08:48 PM

Went out this past weekend, some updated pics for you guys without the topper:

This last pic, we came down that hill you can see in the background and went up the otherside. The Taco is in the middle there somewhere so you can get an idea how big a hill it was on the otherside we climbed.
