BCJC NEWBY RUN - Hale Creek, June 9/13

We had 33 rigs out this past Sunday afternoon for a stock-friendly newby run up to Hale Creek (one Dodge truck, the rest Jeeps). 80% of us were n00bs, got some great tips and tutorials from some of the more experienced off-roaders, in trail etiquette, safety, etc., as well as a great winching demo (I ended up being an object lesson on the way back out, as my stock YJ wouldn't quite make it back up a really lumpy stretch of creekbed).

Warning: PICTURE HEAVY
Spoiler!

Locus Pro - allows you to download maps from Google, Mapquest, OSM, MyTopo, and has a separately downloadable vector map as well. Also has plugins for geocaching, AR, and a whole bunch of other stuff. AND it can export recorded tracks as GPX, or KML to load into Google Earth.

Here are some other snaps from that trip:

If you're 4WD, probably. Dude made it through in a smaller Dodge pickup (next size down from a RAM 1500, I guess). The thing with this part is how much articulation it puts on your suspension - I was generally fine until my YJ's leafs wouldn't stretch enough to keep both ends of an axle on the ground, although there were a couple times my tires were just spinning, because they're not very aggressive. Another guy in a stock YJ with no front sway bar made it out on his own.

Looks like a great time. Any automatics in your group? I'm considering a TJ but would prefer an auto as I don't like the clutch slip during slow crawls.

Oh, I'm sure there were plenty of autos... I wouldn't be surprised if half the JKs there were auto. Not that I did a count or anything - of everything people talk about in their rigs, auto vs. manual is the one thing you hear the least

I like it. Got a few other nav apps I've tried, but this one seems to do the most stuff in one place. Just got EveryTrail as well, gonna try that on the next trip, as it links to a trip-blogging site... looks kinda cool.

Limb lifters (also called limb risers). Steers branches up over your roof instead of letting them smack into your windshielf.

The yellow CJ in the pics lost his clutch on the way down (broke a linkage to the pedal). Managed to make it back out by getting it in gear, starting it up, then matching speeds to shift There's a pic of him there underneath trying to fix it.

Another guy snapped a sway bar link on the way up - see the fifth-from-last pic.

The Liberty that came along apparently scuffed up his side rails

Other than that, no real damage I'm aware of... well, except dared3vil0 smacking his brand new JK up on someone's trailer at the start of the day.

I was that one 4runner with the trail modded bumpers, drove in the sasquatch parking lot just before you all headed out. Love to come join in on the next run you guys have. Been on a few trails and would love to get on a more!

For sure, would be great to have you along! Just remember, 'yotas are only allowed if they bring beer

BTW, was working under the Jeep this afternoon and discovered some damage from the weekend... apparently I was stuck on a big rock crossing a creek... guy behind me said he thought I was done when the thing just let me go. It took its pound of flesh though!

I always bring gas. What else would my truck run on? Or are you referring to the type that comes out of the dark star?

I'm on the fence right now. There is one auto I'm looking at and the others are 5 speed. With a slow crawl I'm worried about burning the clutch out although the manual trans can offer better control from a momentum standpoint.

When you're in 4L, you really shouldn't need to ride the clutch that much. At least, I don't - YMMV

just go with an auto.

if you're building a new platform and wanna go jeep i'd say get an xj

look for one with the 4.0L AMC 242 I6 and the aisin auto. bullet proof combo.

tons of parts, cheap to mod and hilariously easy to work on with the added bonus of more covered gear space, ability to haul stuff and sleep in the back with an air mattress.

just my 0.02 cents

Yea, I've seen a few XJ's I really like but I still dig on the TJ platform. We'll see. I'm looking at a few TJ's this weekend. We'll see how that goes.

I pay for my own gas. Don't care for the grass. No need to pay for ass. How about a free tow for your YJ ass?
