| Garage Floor Epoxy
During the last week, I epoxied my garage floor since I do oil changes in my garage and was very sick and tired with the cleanups. 
I used PPG Aquapon 35 Polyamide Epoxy. For those who want to do up their garage, lemme know I can get you some discount on the product.
There are many great reviews on this product, it doesnt leave tire marks and is chemical/oil resistant, etc.
First, I had etched the concrete floor with muriatic acid (diluted to 1:10 parts of water, using just the muriatic acid will etch the cement yellow and make sure you wet the cement with water first). I did this twice to ensure that there will no grease or oil in the pores of the cement. Rinsing with water each time.
I then applied two coats of epoxy, waited 24hours between each coat. But what I should have done is to prime the cement therefore sealing the cement. I noticed small bubbles started to form when I applied the first coat of epoxy since my cement was very porous. The second coat of epoxy just covered up the bubbles.
On the third coat, I applied a clear coat epoxy and also mixed up some anti-slip compound called Shark Grip. Aquapon 35 is a non-slip epoxy as well, but it can get slippery if there is too much water on it. And since we live in Vancouver, where it rains a lot, it was a good idea.

Sorry just edited it with what I did. I used PPG Aquapon 35 Epoxy, its available at Dulux Paints

It required a lot of prep and patience but it was worth it!
Very satisfied with the results and now easy cleanups when doing my oil changes

I did something like this as well when I built my garage. Looked and worked great until one of kids spray painted his bike without covering the floor. Doh!

Is this the same stuff sold at Canadian tire and Homedepot? I was going to use that stuff 2 years ago in our garage at home when i was talking the guy at homedepot (maybe rona? cant remember). He said heat from the tires could wear the epoxy down. Also said it would have to be applied again in about 5 years, so i decided not to.
At work in our shop, we had the floors epoxied in 2004 and is still holding up. Got lots of chips in it from dropping wrenches etc and some staining in it but hasn't actually worn off. When they applied it, they were saying it was industrial stuff and stronger and waaay more expensive the homedepot stuff. They were on thier hands and knees using grinders to etch the cement. Looked like serious grunt work. And too expensive for home use.
I ended up buying that costco garage flooring vinyl roll out and has been on there 2 years now and holding up rather well. Still wondering about epoxying though

No the stuff is made by PPG so its not the same. Its an industrial product so it doesnt come in kits. You have to buy them separately in gallons. They are actually made for " heavy duty service in corrosive industrial atmospheres where a tough, impact, abrasion and mar-resistant coating is needed."
its really heavy duty epoxy, it will last 5 years+ and look the same then. It all comes down to prep.

that looks really good, but like you said prep is everything. i really want to do it to my parents' garage but it's an old floor and a lot of contaminants have soaked into the concrete. i helped my uncle do his floor which was just as bad using the armor all epoxy product sold at home depot. tried to clean it up as much as we could and epoxied it but after two years it started to lift and now it looks like absolute hell

It pretty much ate the grease away!
The garage kits sold at homedepot are pretty shitty, its nothing compared to the aquapon 35.

we used muriatic acid, but it wasn't anything industrial strength (ie. off the shelf). i wasn't too comfortable using the stuff but now in hindsight i should have have done it several more times.
PUCKLUCK: did you trim your costco stuff down to fit or did you just slap it down like a floor mat?

I needed 2.5 rolls of it. I needed a little trimming to make it fit. Then i slapped it down like a mat. Knowing what i know now, i should have overlapped the seams by an inch or so instead of laying it side by side without any gap. In the winter when its cold, they shrink a bit causing a gap of a millimeter or 2 between mats. In the summer when the sun is on it, it expands a little causing the mats to push against each other causing
them to bubble up a bit. Really not a bit deal though.
Never tried washing it yet but with the diamond tread pattern on it, it cant be squeegie friendly.
Still considering epoxying later down the road

I epoxy coated my shop floor seven months ago its resistant to oil and solvents but if brake fluid is left standing on it, it will lift. I'm glad I did it as cleanup is much easier and seeing tools on the ground is much better too.

First clean up since applying PPG Aquapon. Oil and rust stains stood no chance against my water/Tide and stiff brush. Rinsed with the hose and squeegeed all the water out the door after. The place smelled like Febreeze after.   | |
