Get the samsung note8 if you plan on note taking a lot. The S-pen stylus and the note taking apps that comes with note8 is awesome. I use it whenever I am in a metting. Also it comes with Polairs office (not hte best office app but it is free).

twitchyzero 08-02-2013 10:54 AM

tablets must be a bitch for productivity
you'd definitely want one with stylus if so

!MiKrofT 08-02-2013 07:30 PM

Or you get a Transformer which docs with a keyboard.

jmvdesign 08-02-2013 08:43 PM

How is the volume? is it loud?

i decided to give the nexus 7 2nd gen and logitech bluetooth keyboard a try
not planning on note taking with stylus, just typing inclass notes

the n7 + bluetooth keyboard is small and light, much more convenient than my 15" gaming laptop which is heavy as hell

got both pricematched at fs

showed them amazon pricing
nexus 7 16gb purchased for $227
logitech keyboard for $38 (retail $80)

using it at the moment and its pretty good

out of budget, was looking at around $200-250
managed to spend $299 after tax after pm
and also traded in my 3yr old htc flyer tablet that i got for $70 for $56 at FS

so in total i only spent $243 for the n7 + keyboard

setup looks like this atm

iPad mini has a bigger screen and an Apple logo on the back.

imo, iPad mini is not comparable, maybe the iPad mini 2 is, but who knows when that will be out.

Does this help your decision?

the thing that makes me want the ipad mini more is the better selection of keyboard + case combo (ie logitech ultrathin keyboard cover)
i thought about waiting for the ipad mini 2 but it might not be till oct/nov and no guarantees on retina display yet...
in the end, i got the n7 today going to give this setup a try see how it is carrying it at school

both fs and bb are doing it

flip YOUR TECH - Future Shop
Trade-In Program - Best Buy Canada

however, id probably wouldnt recommend it unless your tablet is really old / hard to sell like my old htc was...
i got $56 for mine, i didnt care too much since i only paid $70 for it

ITR2k5 08-05-2013 12:58 AM

I wouldn't suggest getting Nexus 7 now as a lot of devices are having this random reboot issue.

I brought one last week and the device have been restarting randomly 5-10 times everyday (stock OS with latest updates, stock apps, no download apps).

When I bought it I had this issue, after the latest firmware update, I no longer encounter it.

What Amazon link did you use? I couldn't find anything on the Canadian site other than the 32gb unit.

I had the same set up with my old N7. Just a note, my keyboard developed connectivity issues (so did the other 3 replacements..) after 2-3 weeks of usage. Didn't matter if it was computer or tablet. Hopefully you don't run into those issues since it has been re-launched.

The apple keyboard is actually pretty nice and has been working for almost a year. I just wish it had a nice case like the logitech.

oh damn :(
hopefully the logitech keyboard wont be that bad.. it was hard to pass up on when fs was willing to pricematch it, so i got it for $39+tax

but if they ever release a keyboard case like for the ipad mini for the nexus 7 2nd gen, id be all over it

Planning to pick up a Nexus 7, mostly for gaming, and a bit of reading. Should I pick up the 2013 or 2012 version? I'm fine with either new or used.

BaoTurbo 08-22-2013 01:41 AM

I would get the new one once they fix all the buggy issues with it. I have the old one and the new one seems so much more sleek and slim plus specs are better as well

2nd. Much higher screen resolution your eyes will be happy.

!MiKrofT 08-22-2013 04:05 PM

GPS and Multitouch issues should have been fixed with the latest firmware.

!Yaminashi 08-22-2013 05:29 PM

I would agree with the screen being sharper. I honestly don't see a huge speed difference though.
At least not for day to day tasks..

twitchyzero 08-29-2013 08:10 PM

now that it's been on the market for a few weeks

how's the build quality guys? Common QC issues? Glaring bugs not yet addressed by software patches?

thinking of getting one soon

Bought mine from Bestbuy and had it for just over 2 weeks now.
Never experienced any of the common issues regarding the GPS or multitouch.
In fact, mine has been a flawless device, no issues whatsoever.
Very solid device imo.

way2quik 08-29-2013 09:12 PM

A lot of users complain over at XDA over anything and everything. As for me, my device has been smooth since launch and most issues should have already been fixed with the latest OTA update.
Plus, Franco will be building his own kernel now that the Nexus 7 2013 will be in his hands soon.

m3thods 08-30-2013 10:38 AM

I've been running mine for a week (still stock). No issues with multi-touch or GPS.

Some issues that I've been having are:
  • Some notifications aren't syncing properly on my tablet. Most notable one is Hangouts. It would come up on my PC and phone, but not on my N7. Happens on and off.
  • Recently I've been battling some weird slowdowns/freezes. It seems to have resolved itself but I'll be on the look-out.
  • Netflix is buggy as fuck. You require the latest OTA to actually use the service. And from there it's pretty spotty.

Other than that, it's taken over a huge chunk of my surfing/news-reading time from my phone and PC. Build quality is superb, and it's too bad there's no haptic feedback. That said it isn't/wasn't a deal-breaker for me.

!MiKrofT 08-30-2013 12:30 PM

I prefer having notification led over haptic feedback myself.

I thought that as first, but then figured if I'm not on my tablet, I have my phone on me somehow. Since the only notifications I'm expecting on my N7 are ones from Gmail and Hangouts, I know one way or another (either from my phone or being on the device) whether I have something to check.

Of course that's just my personal use-case. I'm sure a LED is more desired overall if you canvas a bunch of people asking which they prefer.
