Surrey teen dies in Richmond crash

Surrey teen dies in Richmond crash - Richmond Review

An 18-year-old Surrey girl is dead, and local police are investigating following a late Wednesday night single vehicle collision on River Road in East Richmond, near Westminster Highway.

Richmond RCMP Sgt. Cam Kowalski said the accident occurred around 9 p.m., when the vehicle left the road and struck two hydro poles on the 22000 block of River Road.

When Richmond Mounties arrived, firefighters were in the ditch next to the vehicle, trying to extract the teen.

Kowalski said the vehicle had been eastbound prior to hitting the poles.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, but died of her injuries around 6:40 a.m.

There were four people in the vehicle, ages 18 to 21. The others suffered only minor injuries, police said.

Speed is a possible factor, as is driver inexperience, but alcohol is not considered a factor.

The roadway remained closed into early Thursday afternoon, more than 15 hours later.

Was this accident that caused Shaw's internet/TV to be down or was there another one? I called shaw and they said the accident was near the Richmond Hospital.. cant seem to google it....

I couldn't quite understand where this occurred either as it's difficult to comprehend where River Road intersects with Westminster.

My guess is that this was in the East end of Richmond where River Rd curves 90 degrees before a stop sign that meets Westminster (near Starlight Casino). Specifically, somewhere around here It's quite close to Queensborough/New West, however it's still considered East Richmond.

RIP and condolences to her family. A deceivingly dangerous road with the deep ditches on side and the river on another.

It's an unfortunate event but you can't blame the road. Plenty of people drive along it just fine.

i drive that road on an almost daily basis and have done so for as long as i could drive.

here's an updated link that shows exactly where the crash happened.

Crash that claimed Surrey girl happened at bend in Richmond road - Richmond Review

the road itself is not dangerous, despite having the river on one side and a ditch on the other.

the only time it gets dangerous is if you decide to speed along it. i'm glad that the majority of the people in the vehicle survived and feel sorry for the girls (drivers) family.
