My 1995 Subaru Legacy, white color, was sideswiped on driver side by 2nd vehicle changing lanes. Fault assigned 100% to other driver. Damage-deep scratch from middle of rear pass. door to front of driver door. Driver door also dented inward as is main pt of impact. So adjacent front panel also damaged.
ICBC wanted to write off due to repair cost too high for vehicle value

Quoted to repair $3400, vehicle value $2800. Buy back $2100. I chose not to write off so ICBC told me to take to non valet shop where labor charge $50/hr. Certified valet shop $75/hr. (mandatory rates for ICBC claims I am told)

The ICBC quote is $2013.85 that includes a charge for L front bumper and L headlamp assembly R&I. Same for L rear. These look fine to me. It also appears they only allowed $25/hr labour charge. They say they will pay a max of $2800 for repair, which still doesn't allow for $50/hr labour charge.

My question is what are the best steps to take. -Go to body shop in Burnaby
and get an estimate before showing them the ICBC quote, or show quote first.
Does anyone have opinion on the bumper/headlamp inclusion.

My question is why not take the payout ICBC is offering you? Seems like a good offer considering the value of whats out there.

hey need to r&i the front bumper and left headlight to assist paint.

if anything you can ask for a partial r&i front bumper cover to assist paint.

ICBC gave me a list of shops that are non valet, and supposedly have chge $50/hr for ICBC work. The estimator told me these shops have "applied" to be upgraded to be certified as valet shops,so they do good wk that ICBC checks as part of the process.

Nvasion-I think you are right about the paint . They told me white cars are the hardest to match.

one shop-West Coast Frame-has some good ratings-of course could be fakes;
another is Pacific Alignment-one 5* rating.

Does anyone know these shops?

Take the money. No low dollar shop will bring the car back to a nice, not noticeably repaired, condition.
The paint will be way off and with the money they pay out you could easily buy the same vehicle again.

ICBC sucks but in this case I think your screwed.

Even though is a 1995 the car has 165,000 km on it and runs well. It also belonged to my mother before she suddenly died in 2009. She took very good care of it. No rust. May need CV jts done (yes I know-expensive) It does have sentimental value but I doubt I could find as good a car for the offered $

I may end up doing that, but will keep trying for now. The car is in much better shape than most 1995 Subs and has sentimental value. (see post 7) What is even more annoying is the car damage is not very visible-the scratches on the front bumper from my daughters trying to learn to parallel park are much more obvious

If the damage is not bad then why not ask ICBC to write you a chq for the damages and repair what you see fit and leave the rest alone or repair however you see fit?

I did this with an ex's Neon. She got rear ended, the damage was cosmetic....and it was a Neon so we asked for a chq for the cost of repairs and they had no problem doing that.

you can cash settle with ICBC for the damages and keep the car then just take that cash and your car to whomever you choose for repairs. I can suggest a couple of decent shops for the repair both of which I use for my own cars or customers cars. Mind you I do all my own body work and just get them for final finishing

Is very far away from where I live, but I guess would be a conflict of
interest to advise any others

You know there's a link to Rise there in Phil's signature... if you bothered to click it, you'd see they're not a body shop, so... no conflict for anyone Phil recommends.

Would your mom care if you wasted a bunch of money fixing this car?

I don't know you or your family, but I know if my mom died and left me her car and it was badly damaged, she wouldn't want me paying more than the car was worth to repair it.

Take a cheque from ICBC, spraybomb the car with duplicolor, sell it to someone who doesn't care what their car looks like and buy another. It's the smart choice.

Or, if you don't care, just keep the damn thing. You're not going to be impressing anyone driving an 18 year old subaru anyway so who cares if it's got a few dents?

I say this as a guy who's owned MANY 18 year old subarus, I'm not trying to be insulting. Just stating facts

Oh it can be so hard to go on these blogs knowing someone will eventually call you lazy, lacking in common sense and of low intelligence.
I did bother to look on Phil's website,but thought that this was the business he was recommending . I did notice the lack of ref to body work on the site but assumed as missed something. I also thought he may not be able to give advice on other shops, if his shop supplied the same services]

I will likely do just that. Go to reputable body shop for another quote, and pay the difference. Buying another used vehicle is an exercise in torture for the non knowlegable, and very time consuming/wasting. Don't think I could get as good for 2800-low mileage, garage kept, serviced regularly by Docksteaders.
