Porsche 918 Spyder sets Nurburgring Record

Can't seem to find the original Porsche 918 thread so if anyone finds it just merge this one into it.

The Porsche 918 Spyder deserves the credit for forging the hybrid supercar territory trodden by the likes of Ferrari and McLaren, even if the car's venture to market has been a long one. But that lag time between concept and production has allowed Porsche to attain some pretty spectacular achievements, one of which is the production car lap record for the Nürburgring.

During final testing for the 918 Spyder, which made its public debut this week at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche factory racing driver Marc Lieb managed to set a blistering 6:57 lap time for the full Nürburgring- Nordschleife, smashing the old record of 7:11.57 set by another German supercar, the Gumpert Apollo Sport, back in 2009.

In case you doubt Porsche’s claims, the company had Sport Auto present to serve as an objective observer and also produced this thrilling video. It shows Lieb’s record-breaking run from the cockpit and demonstrates just how dramatic it is running the ‘Ring in under seven minutes. Be sure to watch it in full screen mode and with the volume turned up!

It should be noted that the 918 Spyder was fitted with the car’s available ‘Weissach’ package. This includes weight-saving features and some aerodynamic aids. In total it helps shed around 100 pounds from the standard car’s 3,715-pound curb weight. Peak output, however, remains fixed at 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque.

Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche’s head of R&D said after the feat, "We promised a great deal with the 918 Spyder, namely to redefine driving pleasure, efficiency and performance. We have kept our word."

This is an impressive time for a road legal car. To put it into perspective, the Zonda R did 6:47 with slick tires and it has gigantic spoilers & splitters. The 918 is only 10 seconds away from basically a race car.

Wow so I've seen alot of these nurburgring speed runs, and that is by far the smoothest, most relaxed run I've ever seen. Over the bumps it stays very stable, vibrations in the interior don't even show up on the camera. You don't even get crazy driveline whine or ridiculous exhaust noises.

Genuinely impressed

Very impressive! It'll be fun to see this, the P1, and the LaFerrari duke it out for supremacy.

Shit, GT-R can't even beat crappy American cars like the Z06, ZR-1 or Viper at the Nurburgring. Stupid, lousy, 2-valve per cylinder pushrod engined RWD only cars with minimal electronics. And they kick the GT-R's ass all day long.

boostfever 09-11-2013 09:48 PM

ZR-1 and Vipers are the crappy American cars? so what are the nice ones out of Detroit?
Cobalt and Cavalier?

bcrdukes 09-11-2013 09:52 PM

I'm pretty sure dangonay was being somewhat facetious.

boostfever 09-11-2013 10:04 PM

my bad, I don't know the ring times for the GT-R or ZR-1. thought he was serious.

Sick driving... not even a cage, props

Timpo 09-12-2013 12:07 AM

WHAT THE SHIT!!!!

Timpo 09-12-2013 12:08 AM

NOOOOO GT-R CAN NEVER LOSE!!!!!!!!

I still think it'll just be a matter of time til GT-R beat the shit out of that 918 though, just like how it did to the Ferrari Enzo, you know?

Mr.Money 09-12-2013 09:29 AM

holy...what does this car cost and release day?.

vexor 09-12-2013 01:35 PM

What it's like on the street

Presto 09-12-2013 03:48 PM

Holy fucking shit. The torque curve must be super flat. There's an RSR variant that uses a flywheel for energy storage. Now, that is super cool:

@ 3:10, I like the button that pushes power to the front wheels to get out spin-out situations. When I played with my die-cast cars, that's how I imagined them to drive. LOL

No, the corvette and viper are pretty shitty cars.

Great at what they do...bolt a big engine in a small(ish) car and make some noise..but its your typical american build quality.

kwy 09-13-2013 08:12 AM

That doesn't apply to the new C7, which is truly a world class all around sports car.

Lomac 09-13-2013 09:58 AM

Damn. I'll take one in white, please.

sorry but C6 and C7 are both Ferrari copies.

When we first saw the C6 photos, people actually thought that someone photoshopped C5 and 360 Modena together.

The C7 looks just like 599 or something.
