Netflix: Canada's ISP bandwidth caps "almost a human rights violation"

Netflix exec: Canada's broadband caps "almost a human rights violation"

I heard it was bad, but wow... 15GB cap? I'd be over that in 2 days after watching some football games and RAW.

In other news, Netflix exec found to have a sliiiiight panache for exaggeration, you know, in light of actual human rights violations.

But I mean, keep talking. The fine people of the world that don't have clean water to drink, risk disease, war and live in utter poverty while starving are truly concerned about our internet access.

He has a point in that it is really bad. It would be too bad if the hyperbolic statement distracts the actual issue

Yeah.. we're a little more lucky here in the west. In toronto, I think the ISPs caps are at around 20gb (if you're lucky).

I meant monthly cap. It shouldn't be surprising if he downloaded 400GB over 6 days - and not much the rest of the month - and didn't get a warning, if he's on BB50 or BB100 (400GB and 500GB caps respectively). 450GB and 550GB if he's in Shaw Friends. On the other hand, if he's on High Speed 10...

From what I've read though, whether the acceptable-use team contacts you or not depends mainly on whether you exceed your cap regularly, and also on the time of day you do most of your downloading.

Shaw does not really care anymore about band with caps. They are also installing WIfi across the city of Nanaimo and have installed a hotspot in our gas station. Funny thing is 4G LTE is faster than my Shaw high speed.

The major ISP's in this country also own cable, satellite and iptv systems so it's not really shocking that they're capping the bandwidth and making it difficult for internet based services to thrive in Canada.

I have shaw nitro, never had a warning before in the 15+ years of Rogers/Shaw

I'm thinking they don't want to send me warnings as they can't actually see what my traffic is consisting of through my router?

I think the Netflix guy has an interest in getting rid of these caps.

If you goto netflix quality settings, the HD quality says it can use up to 2.4gb/hr.

With a cap of 50GB, watching Netflix for about 20 hours caps you. It's pretty retarded to buy internet and use be able to use all of the internet service.

I see this from the telus/shaw prespective too, where they're losing customers due to netflix providing content to their existing customers. Who would pay for basic cable when they could have internet, netflix, and no commercials.

I'm on the side of having no data caps available for internet. Personally, because I use a lot of netflix, download a bunch of stuff (porn), and like not having to watch my bandwidth. On a more tangible reason for unlimited bandwidth, it'll allow for a new business of content delivery to open up. But this is Canada, we're laggards, I can only dream.

Lol, they can see exactly how much you're downloading. If you're on BB100 than your limit is 500 GB, but I haven't heard of Shaw enforcing it...

I've heard a GB costs a company like Shaw less than a cent.
