Auto Crime: How Your Neighbourhood Compares

Vancouver Sun | News | Auto Crime | Neighbourhood Map

From today's Vancouver Sun:

The interactive map below shows which neighbourhoods have the highest auto crime rates per capita, based on postal code areas and total auto crimes from 2010 to 2012. Select type of crime from the dropdown menu at the bottom. Click on a neighbourhood for more details. Some neighbourhoods with low populations will show high rates of auto crime despite few actual incidents. The map displays neighbourhoods in Metro Vancouver but you can view the whole province by zooming out. Postal code areas are copyright of the Canada Post Corporation.

I know it's stolen vehicles per 100k residents - but some of those areas on the island - had 4 cars stolen last year - and that was enough to skew the results and make it 2nd worst in the province!

Sea Island has 785 residents - they have an average of 2 cars stolen - and that makes it good enough to be 20th in the list.

Yeah, I don't put much stock in the ranking, I'm looking more at the absolute numbers (i.e. how many cars stolen, etc...).

On the bottom left you can also change the crime type. Not surprising Metrotown area has huge break-in numbers.

The papers should stick to what they do best:

1. Skimming Vancitybuzz's Twitter feed.
2. Condo developer press releases.
3. 30 pages of car advertisements.
4. Articles about how much the Canucks suck.

Bikes & skateboards, probably not since the numbers are from ICBC. Motorcycles, probably!

Statistically at least for stolen vehicles, one of the better spots in the region.

Overall, I am pretty impressed with the reduction of crimes (at least those provided). Even in areas with higher numbers, everything has seemed to reduced fairly significantly in 10 years.
