Good Bye Winamp

Winamp shuts down after 15 years, one more gem of the 90's fades away

Though the kids of today might not even recognise the name, the popular media player Winamp will always be remembered as the go-to media player of the 90's. AOL officially announced Winamp's shut down on Wednesday, which should happen by next month. Though it's popularity waned over the course of the late 90's and early 2000's, it was at one point the essential media player for listening to local music, MP-3 audio files, or radio streams.

In 2002, Winamp's original creator, Nullsoft was acquired by AOL for a stock price of a little north of $80 million, where it has been in development until now.

Over the years to change with the times, Mac and Android versions were released, but these versions couldn't compete with the already existing Windows Media Player fan base.

As of now, no direct reason has been released for Winamp's shutdown after 15 years, but given its decline in popularity and the rise in popularity of iTunes and Windows Media Player, it isn't that hard to guess why they're closing shop.

There is still a small window left for those who want to relive old times with Winamp. The official site will close down on December 21.

Justin Frankel, the producer closely associated with Winamp took to Twitter to assure the fans that Mike, the llama, who was basically the mascot of the media player, will get through these hard times.

FN-2199 11-23-2013 10:45 PM

^ Hipster.

Gh0stRider 11-23-2013 11:07 PM

you can still use it, just can't download it afterwards. so download the file and keep a backup.

ScizzMoney 11-23-2013 11:11 PM

I use iTunes. Plays the music I want, not sure what else I need.

SkinnyPupp 11-23-2013 11:19 PM

Winamp is still the best 'basic' media player out there. For library, WMP is the best. I have tried all the ones people suggest that are supposed to combine the two, but they all suck

Nothing is worse than itunes though, at least on windows

bcrdukes 11-23-2013 11:21 PM

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Out of the box, Winamp played and supported a lot of file formats iTunes and WMP did not without having to download patches/hacks/extensions for etc. And fuck iTunes to hell and back a thousand times.

winson604 11-23-2013 11:35 PM

I still use winamp on my PC and phone. RIP

Here's hoping they make it open source and it gets improved even further (and the crapware that got built into it gets taken out)

I wish :fuckthatshit:

Traum 11-24-2013 12:31 AM

^^ Apparently there are some patent problems that are preventing Winamp from going open source, so I wouldn't count on it going in that direction.

Prolowtone 11-24-2013 12:37 AM

I was just talking about winamp with a coworker the otherday :(
guess ill be downloading skins

Mr.Money 11-24-2013 12:45 AM

foobar2000 - better SQ then winamp...

HonestTea 11-24-2013 01:03 AM

Winamp was the shit! It'll be missed :(

Gazorcoop 11-24-2013 01:21 AM

Still using Winamp today. Will definitely miss it. Always use it cause of the cool skins and layouts, but my number one reason is the SQ addons. Those enhancers rock.

I stopped using winamp ever since I got my first iPod, iTunes is far better at managing your library and smart playlist.

I don't think I've manually organised my music for the past 10 years.

But i remember winamp sounded better than iTunes when playing MP3 files.
