Selling a vehicle at a local auction??

I have a high mileage 2007 Escalade ESV. Sitting at about 240k km on the odo.

I have had it on Craigslist for the past 6 months and have not had any luck selling it. I have maintenance records, also installed Wilwood 8 piston brakes($7k) brand new oem struts, ball joints etc and it shows nicely and runs like a champ. It has a few small cosmetic issues but overall runs nice and drives nice and is priced at what I would consider very low at $17,900. only 1 accident for $2500 at about 150k km. Ive Had a lot of low ballers($12k:badpokerface:) and time wasters but have yet to sell.

I am at the point now where I would to just put it into a local auction and cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Has anybody had any luck selling a vehicle threw an auction?

I am specifically considering this:

ADESA Richmond | Sell your vehicle at Auction

any thoughts and input would be appreciated.

What you see as a fair price is not what the market thinks is a fair price. If you had a lot of "low ballers" around $12k then that is probably the market price for your vehicle. I wouldn't expect the otherwise to happen at an auction.

boostfever 11-29-2013 05:51 PM

It will probably sell for less than your CL offers at the Adesa. You can put a reserve bid on it, but you might end up not getting high bids for it at the auction.

IMO, part out the expensive parts (esp the brakes) and sell them separately so you won't lose as much money.

Grim 11-29-2013 05:52 PM

i think you should put it on auction with no reserve :troll:

Ya fair enough, and usually I would agree with you. But I have done my research(no not just KBB) and talked to 2 GM dealerships who said they couldn't take it because of the high kms and warranty issues, but that $15k-$16k is more then fair for a private sale. Also the guy who told me about the Auction said to expect $15k-$18k(hes a regular) there is another with similar KM and all OEM parts for $20k and pretty much all the rest with 100k-150k km go for $25k-$30k. I can see your point but realistically the old body 2003 escalades with 150k km still go for $12k...

ya I was thinking of putting a low reserve but obviously more then $12k

yeah I have been toying with idea, just get a set of GM brakes from a tahoe, suburban etc at a wrecker and have them installed and then sell the wilwood brakes on ebay/craigslist etc.

An 03 with 150km may go for 12, but it has NINETY THOUSAND less KM than yours. As for what people "tell you it's worth", that means jack shit. It's worth exactly what people will pay for it. From my quick Craigslist search, you do appear to be priced within the market. Would i take 12k for it? Probably not. I would price your truck at $15,900 and take $14,000 for it. I honestly feel market value is $14,000-16,000. If it's been on the market for 6 months, expect low of market value.

Whether the Wilwood brakes are $7, $700, $7,000 or $70,000 it doesn't matter to the person buying the truck. You cannot expect a return on mods. Good luck with the sale.

Phil@rise 11-30-2013 02:01 PM

if you think 12k is a lowball offer wait till its at auction lol.

Lomac 11-30-2013 04:00 PM

I'm assuming this is yours:

BEST DEAL YOU WILL FIND ON CRAIGLIST! 2007 Escalade ESV

Apart from the fact that the mileage is relatively high for the MY (average of 40k km/year), it's also a US import, which tends not to be a very desirable trait for used, non-exclusive models.

That said, Revscene has a deal with Adessa if you're thinking of following that route.

meme405 11-30-2013 04:46 PM

You really neglected to mention it was a US import. No wonder people are low balling you, US imports simply do not fetch the same as their Canadian counterparts. A locally owned, operated and maintained vehicle will always fetch more than out of area vehicles, that's simply a fact that its easier to track if the vehicle was involved in some sort of nefarious incident.

The fact that you are finding other vehicles listed for 20k+ is completely irrelevant to the price of your vehicle, because they are only LISTED for that value, they are not SELLING for that price. Just like you these people are having clowns coming up to them and low balling the shit out of them until they get fed up and just sell the car for MARKET value.

As others have said:

Part out your BBK and list the car for 15K (better would be 14K) and say firm. Then do not negotiate even a penny, do not even entertain offers.

EDIT: also your truck has hideous wheels on it, so it is not showing nearly as well as it could. Try to find a set of the stock 22's, they look miles better than the current wheels.

EDIT: also why would you believe what a dealership told you is the value of your car, especially right after they tell you that they are not at all interested in buying it. Sorry but they are the wrong people to be asking the market value of a vehicle...

meme405 11-30-2013 05:02 PM

If you are serious about selling ASAP shoot me a PM, ill give you 11000 without the brakes, I will pick up the truck with a flatbed. You can fetch 3k for the brakes and you have 14000.

E60_M5 11-30-2013 05:30 PM

^ take this guys money and laugh your way to the bank. with 240,000kms and being a us import with an accident claim. his offer to u is more than fair.

btw, no one buying a used 07 escalate would give a crap about your wilwood brakes. take it out and list it on ebay.

eurochevy 11-30-2013 05:52 PM

An Escalade with 230k km and you're asking for 17k LOL take meme's offer. As for the brakes, no one gives a crap about brakes on an suv apart from stock, if it was a tuner car or something then sure but its an suv lol

meme405 11-30-2013 10:30 PM

Thanks Guys^

I need a new DD and a long hauler. I was actually looking at a QX56, but an escalade with an LSX swapped in sounds mighty tempting...:fullofwin:

dared3vil0 11-30-2013 10:40 PM

Holy fuck you're planning on buying it and swapping in an LSx?

This. will. be. epic!

OP, take the offer!!!!!!!

As soon as the first sign of engine trouble yeah that would be the plan.

And it would still be way cheaper than buying a QX56.

What is more intriguing about this plan is the reason I have been looking to get a new DD... Hopefully starting the process of FI on my FX come early spring.:fuckyea::awwyeah:

I agree 100% about the brakes. Nobody gives a shit.

Thanks for your reply. I had aftermarket rims and I sold them separately to get back some of my money. I just got the currents rims for dirt cheap and threw them on, but I agree that the stock 22s would look a lot better.

As for what the true market value is of the vehicle I would base it on KBB, dealerships, and people in the business before I based it on lowball offers. 90% of the intrest is from a bunch of surrey jacks/10k ballers that want to get there hands on an escalade at the price of a Ford Explorer. I had offers initally for around $20k with the aftermarket rims about 6 months ago and turned them all down thinking I was cheating myself. Now I would be happy to sell it for $15-$16K

And as for the american import part, I totally agree to but the truck was imported with less then 6,000km so it has a full dealership history in Canada.

once again thanks for you post, and I will consider getting a set of stock 22s..

Ill try my luck at the auction first. If things go as bad as everyone predicts I will strongly consider your offer.

If you plan on sending it to auction, take his 11k offer. I'd estimate 9000-11000 at auction- with the brakes.

twitchyzero 12-01-2013 10:19 AM

i thought carfax and its equivalent extends its history search into US cars as well?

Lomac 12-01-2013 10:28 AM

Carfax is predominantly American. Carproof is the Canadian equivilant, though I prefer ICBC reports over both... provided it's a local car.

I thought carproof was the best in Canada, even over ICBC.

Meme's offer is generous IMO, you are going to have a tough time selling an escalade in this market. I agree, auctions would potentially be worse, not to mention additional fees.

Who predominantly goes to Adesa to buy cars? Usually experienced low-ballers for car dealerships. The average joe usually shops on craigs/kijiji or a used lot.

Lomac 12-01-2013 10:40 AM

I think it's more of a case of YMMV depending on the vehicle itself. I've noticed in the past for some cars that Carproof had more info than ICBC/Aircare combined, but then on other vehicles the opposite was true.

meme405 12-01-2013 12:27 PM

The truth with cars from the US is that is it just plain easier to hide the past of the vehicle.

There is a reason why those kingsway dealers are notorious and have a lot of ex-US vehicles. Sometimes it can be pretty hard to find out the true record of a US vehicle and people have been caught up buying lemons. Ever since this problem emerged the price of ex-US vehicles in Canada dropped significantly.

I honestly do not care much about the past of the vehicle, as long as the vehicle is safe (which I would be checking the structure and safety systems to make sure there is no cheap repairs done), then I am fine. As I said before at the first sign of problems with the drive train or engine, I would just swap it out for a crate engine. I even know a guy who has an infiniti VK56 that was built entirely by Jim wolf just sitting on a pallet. I am almost positive he would sell it to me at a good deal.

dared3vil0 12-01-2013 12:30 PM

A Nissan V8 in an escalade. Now THAT would be cool.

And the engine, aside from the modifications and bullet proof internals already done by Jim Wolf, has absolutely ENDLESS possibilities. I mean you go have a look on titan talk or any titan forums and the work and mods available to this engine rival the VQ35 in my FX. Its nuts.

Only problem with this route is I need to find a seperate tranny whereas a crate engine I would have it all as one package, but I am not against putting in the work.

PS. Sorry OP I will stop going OT on your thread.

As stated in the PM whatever happens GLWS.

Carproof comes in many different flavours. The most comprehensive Carproof includes an ICBC search as part of it and will definitely not show any different history than pulling an ICBC search independently.
