Mostly likely the case, just gets factored into their marketing budgets. I would suspect it's a lot like what we do in film/tv production. For example, in addition to traditional purchasing of ad time in commercial break slots, Microsoft gave our production a giant case of Surface 2 tablets to litter throughout our shots, they aren't expecting them back, its just factors into the cost of advertising basically, lol we now have too many Surface 2 tablets than we know what to do with.

Still, pretty neat thing to do by Westjet

I feel like shopping at Best Buy and flying with Westjet now...

This was on CNN. They interviewed the VP of communication. If they reached 200k in views they were going to bring one needy family together. They also do charity work for Ronald McDonald, house make a wish, Boy scouts, Girl guides and a bunch and a bunch of other charities. If any of there workers does 40 hours of community service they get 2 free tickets to anywhere West Jet flies.

Westjet is a very well run company, once I'm finished my commercial pilots lic. and rack up some experience I've already decided to pursue WJ rather than AC. Might try to weasel my way into Encore somehow and then try to turn that into a future job at WJ.

PeanutButter 12-10-2013 04:46 PM

I wonder if everyone on the flight did this?
I would love to see the faces of those who were too "cool" to do this and them end up getting nothing!

Seriously? Man. This is just nothing more than a complicated advertisement for Westjet. It's so smart. Tear-jerker is a stretch for me though.

You have no soul.

Razor Ramon HG 12-10-2013 09:06 PM

I did a case study on the corporate culture of WestJet and found out what a great company they are. This video just supports that.

I don't know how the logistics would work but this would've been more of a feel-good thing if the people getting stuff were poor and homeless rather than middle class white folk. I get the marketing but that kid probably would've gotten an Android tablet from his parents.

Sorry to Grinch it up but I don't know...seems like it would've been a better video if they gave gifts to some Oliver Twist lookin' kids that don't get to have much or anything for Christmas.

WestJet VP Richard Bartrem: "More than 7 thousand flights are given away each year to our community investment partners so we can actually help with fundraising and actually help people activate the very thing that they do... and that is whether reuniting families or getting sick children the opportunity to fly..."

I think it's a good gesture. Some excellent viral marketing and they give a little something back to there customers as opposed to a giveaway where some random person could win.

WS is the IATA prefix for WestJet (flight numbers would be WSxxxx). An aspiring pilot should know that ;)

falcon 12-11-2013 11:17 AM

Yeah I know that, but WJ is easier to understand. I'm not going to go start calling british airways speedbirds because no one will know what the hell I'm talking about.

Thanks for not using WS. I would've been like wtf is WS.
Good job communicating to your audience - a useful skill for an aspiring pilot!
