If you really want to destroy the information on paper, use fire.

If you want to destroy the info on HDD, literally break the HDD.

Pretty common sense...

I have a personal shredder I use at home for sensitive documents. When I burn them afterwards, they go up in flames really well - nothing is left over within seconds.

Writing 1&0 a few times over each sector is actually very energy intensive. Not to mention depending on how old is the drive, it might just get error'ed out before it actually able to finish the job. It is faster and cheaper to give a acid bath to the platters, and sell the aluminum for the casing for scrap. Scrap people like those casings because they are pure alloy, it is easier for them to process.

id use killdisk and format 7 times, then open it and smash it. paper? shred then burn. burning a big ream of paper takes surprisingly long. take it all camping like i do and have a nice bonfire.

some businesses want their data secured and don't want anyone to have access to anything when the computer is recycled.

Laser Printer Shredder

if you have an old laser printer you can convert it into a paper shredder too (google for diy)

Or you can buy a real laser shredder from Whitaker Bros.

Turns the paper into powder

http://www.whitakerbrothers.com/lasershredder#

or you can buy one of their NSA grade paper shredders

Much easier though
