| Squeaky brakes and how to fix ?
So my 2004 ML 500's brakes squeak really loud when I brake. I am guessing that I park it outside all the time and don't really drive it that much.
What can I do to fix this and how much would it cost to get it fixed outside?
I know in the Winter months, brakes do squeak a bit but it happens for me in the summer months also
car is from 2004 but has only 30,000 kms on it and never had brakes serviced before

drums or disks?
are you going aftermarket or OEM parts?

10 year old brakes never serviced? I'd highly recommend having a full brake inspection done... Could be A LOT of corrosion on the parts if rarely driven and left outside for 10 years.

I opened this thread and and I got up and literally walked away. My dad has a 03 ML500 and has had the same problem for a long time. The mechanic can't seem to fix it. It started when he got the brakes replaced. The new Mercedes brake pads use a new material that causes squeaking and the old style break pads are not available anymore.

stick with oem pads, it was an expensive lesson to try aftermarket pads on MB.

I had an ML430, I changed the pads and rotors (WBR Pads), 2 weeks later the squeak came back. Ended up changing pads again and the problem went away. At that time I bought the cheapest pads possible because I didn't plan on keeping the car.
Onto the next car. Pads were done so this time I actually bought the more expensive pads (akebono premium) and that was the issue. I'm guess because the "premium" pads were gripping more than the shittier pads. Bought middle of the line (PBR) and problem went away.
I dunno, but I just don't seem to have much luck with brakes. Always end up doing it twice.

OEM pads on all the ML's I have worked on and driven and never an issues.
I think the issue is that these brakes are over 10 years old and have been left out in the weather for that long.
I would imagine there is a lot of rust and corrosion in there.
After that kind of time being outside and driven so little it is not uncommon for calipers to seize up. I would have a shop take a look at it for sure.

It depends on where the squeak comes from. If it is vibration from the back of the pad with the carrier, then no matter the brake material it is, it won't quiet it down. There is a lots of trial and error and honestly brake jobs are cheap, so I highly doubt most techs are willing to track it down. Quote:

I enjoy older cars with lower mileage, but only if they've been regularly maintained. 10 years is long enough for rubber lines and various fittings to start drying out, based on the minimal amount of driving apparently done.
But, man... 30,000 in 10 years? I'm on pace to break 78,000km this year alone. 
As for the original question, brakes can squeak for numerous reasons: worn pads and they're now rubbing against the squealers, rock stuck somewhere either in the caliper/bracket or even up against the piston itself (though the latter is unlikely), you're using semi-metallic pads (possible, since metallic pads are designed for heavier vehicles like an SUV).... or because they're simply angry and want everyone around you to know.

Pad and rotor replacement is probably the single easiest repair job one can do on a vehicle, apart from oil changes. Unless you want a complete service record history indicating that it's been performed at a MB dealership, there's no reason to avoid going to an independent garage or even a brake specialty shop. They'll charge a hell of a lot less, and you'll leave with as good of a repair job as you would have with MB.

Any garage should know how to service it

Late response, but education none the less.
The wear indicators on your brake pads are pressing against your brake rotor, producing the noise you are hearing, they are steel tabs built into the pads. I'm 99% sure that this is your problem based on the fact that you said you've never taken it to have the brakes serviced.
Depending on how long you've been driving on those pads after the wear indicator has been activated, you might need to turn your rotors or replace them entirely based on whether they are scored and how deep.
Depending on whether you have free time and space, replacing your brake pads is an easy task that does not usually require expensive tools to complete. Many tutorials are available on the internet regarding removal and installation, and how to check that your rotors are in good condition, it should not take more than two hours to complete everything.

Welcome to my world hahaha. But I currently have the same issue as you and it is a common problem with the w163. Generally, it's the new pads that are the issue. Sadly you have to replace the pads again to 'fix' it.
Also check your tires pressure, the unequal pressure between these tires will exacerbate the issue.
Taking it to the dealer will guarantee that the job will not be done until the squeaks are gone, but you pay for the price. Go to a Mercedes specialist shop instead, and see if they are familiar with these issues, otherwise you have to try different brands until it's fixed.

so i did a quick search and it seems like "richmond motorworks" in Richmond is a shop that specializes in german cars. Anyone have any experience with them?
are there other specialized benz shops in richmond?
