Ideally, waterpumps would driven by the acc belt and the cam(s) would be gear driven.

some of those poly tensioners and guides are fcking garbage! wear out and fall apart

On topic: Save the car if you can. Do a motor swap as already suggested. Or get a second opinion from a reputable shop like The Speed Syndicate.

maybe Bitcoins!

for those interested in buying the car, she's going to snap some pictures tomorrow. She said it was "on the gurney" when she went by the shop today so she couldn't take any.

I still don't know what's wrong with it. She says it turns over but blows smoke and dies. I so want her to get it looked at properly/fixed or motor swapped (if even necessary) but she's adamant of not spending any $ and just getting rid of it as is and getting a Benz. I think someone is about to get a wicked deal on either a quick fix or motor swap!

As someone who's experienced a broken belt on an interference engine, I'd rather replace a chain tensioner over bent valves any day.

"Less likely to break" is the wrong term to describe a chain. They might stretch, but to completely break is pretty fucking rare.

it sounds real suspicious that a "regularly maintained" honda motor would die at 125k km. either she's being lied to or your friend (who clearly knows shit all about cars) really gave it "lady driven" maintenance (see zero maintenance).

FYI, k-series = timing chain

I question what kind of "maintenance" was done? I find it hard for her car to have 125,000 Km and it's motor is done

I agree... 125k seems awfully low for a catastrophic engine failure, especially on an unmodified (Honda) car.

yeah exactly,

wheels, tires(if they're in good condition), brakes, exhaust, seats, steering wheel, pretty much anything on RSX should worth something.

Just because she has receipts for maintenance doesn't mean all the required maintenance was done, or done on time.

It sounds like these guys are about as clueless as the mechanic the PO of my car had (maybe they're the same ones, is the car in PoCo?). They told him it needed either piston rings, a headgasket, or a clutch. I bought it and checked it out and you know what it needed? Fucking spark plugs and wires. Get another opinion because if they can't tell these three problems apart very quickly they're useless mechanics.

What colour/smell of smoke? Since she seems too dense to actually FIND OUT WHAT'S WRONG before bailing on the car, you should buy it from her and properly diagnose it. If the motor does end up being toast do a quick swap and sell it.

Its like winning the lottery when you find cars where the PO thinks the worst and the fix is simple. My friend bought his 2001 pathfinder for 2500 bucks and all it needed was 1 coil pack. As soon as I saw the car I knew the problem right away, I told the owner and he was dead set it was a bigger problem.
