My house has been without TV Cable for like almost 10 years already.
CUT +1

Streaming is the way to go!!!

The local OTA is on the North Shore mountains, alternatively the US ones are in Seattle.. if you live in places that have good line of sight to either, just point the antenna towards them you are good to go.

do you need additional hardware?

the netflicks content.. is this older stuff or does they have new stuff that is on cable?

I'd cut the cable if I could find a good, 1080 HD, on-demand (so I don't have to wake up at 5am) stream of F1 races.

dude...youtube...no kidding...in my spare time, i just create a playlist of full episodes of cartoons...try looking for donald duck or chip and dale and you'll find dozens of 2+ hours worth of episodes...

also, if you have OTA, then CBC kids in the morning and kbtc-kids in the afternoon...glorious HD...

Sorry to bring up this old thread but I'm planning to cut cord in the next few months.

Thinking about getting Roku and was wondering who has experience with it.

Aside from Netflix and torrents, the only thing I'm concerned about is NHL. I've looked registered over at hockeystreams because I found out they support Roku and wanted to get some feedback :)

I'm going to sign up for NHL Centre Ice next season and use that, for the same price of one month of cable I get every game on any device I want.

I've heard great things about hockeystreams. In fact, they are supposedly better than Game Center, but resides in a grey zone.

Vansterdam 04-23-2015 06:16 AM

whoa never heard of this hockeystreams before.

gonna try and register and use it with my chromecast :D

NHL Game Center works virtually flawlessly on all my Devices and my built in TV app, so Personally I'd be weary to try somthing else

My main thing in cutting the cable is no more sports highlights. Any way to get sports center etc without cable?

I really like the free NHL Gamecenter highlights. They're not like TSN clips where you have someone talking on top of them. They are around 5 minutes of video per game and I get a better idea of the game since there is more video than TSN.

For my cable cutting setup:

Netflix for binge watching, or when I have no idea what I want to watch

VPN + Torrents + WDTV media player for most of my stuff

Newsgroups + WDTV for tv shows released the night of

Netflix costs 8.99 a month. My VPN costs about 3 bucks a month. I buy a chuck of 25GB of newsgroups (I think its 10 bucks) that never expire just in case I need a tv show the night it airs. I find that torrents are slow the first night but speedy after that.

If you register Game Center Live through a Russian IP, it's only $75USD, cheaper than hockeystreams. Because Rogers bought the rights to broadcasting as well, they removed all the blackouts in BC, so you'll never run into an issue with it.

What's better about hockeystreams? Never had a chance to try it.

newgroups - if you wait for the sales for newsgroupdirect, I think you can buy a terabyte of data for $40. Lasts me over a year personally.

Gucci Mane 04-23-2015 09:00 AM

netflix and popcorn time are all i need.

sonick 04-23-2015 11:19 AM

Gamecenter has a 1 to 2 minute delay whereas I hear Hockeystreams is virtually live.

The thing I like most about GCL is that I can watch games from the beginning while the live game is going on. The downside is it only works via browser, which is pretty bad (does not go full screen all the way) and is resource intensive.

Watching the GCL stream via Kodi (XBMC) allows full-screen and 60fps video, but it you cannot rewind/watch from beginning while the game is live.

+1 on the Russian IP method, that's what I used this season. Did not realize about the blackouts, that is super convenient as I've been needlessly connecting to my PIA VPN every game.

I have to get my wife to turn the ringer off her phone - because I recognize the sounds of the her alerts whenever someone scores a goal... So when we're hemmed in our own zone and the sound goes off, I instantly get depressed.

Hondaracer 04-25-2015 10:20 AM

whats nice about game center live as well as it has a pause function and works like a PVR would when paused, fast forwarded, etc. does the hockey streams have a similar function?
