FORSBERG UNHAPPY WITH SELECTION OF CANADIAN OFFICIALS FOR FINAL

Colorado Avalanche and Swedish legend Peter Forsberg didn't mince words when it came to what he thought about Canadian referees working Sunday's gold medal game between Sweden and Canada.

"What a f___ing joke!" the seven-time All-Star said to Swedish reporters, calling the selection of officials Kelly Sutherland, Brad Meier, Greg Devorski and Derek Amell "comedy at its highest level."

Referees Sutherland and linesmen Devorski and Amell are Canadian, while referee Meier is an American who makes his home in Calgary.

Not all Swedes are seemingly as upset as Forsberg.

Veteran Swedish defenceman Niklas Kronwall of the Detroit Red Wings believes that both teams can benefit from North American officials.

"We are used to having referees from USA and Canada in the NHL," said Kronwall. "We know their standards so I think it's easier for us too if the referees are from there."

Former Norris Trophy winner and Ottawa Senators standout Erik Karlsson agreed with his fellow blueliner.

"I think most referees over there [in the National Hockey League] are Canadian, too," said Karlsson. "They probably support Montreal or Toronto, but they don't make any difference there. I couldn't care less about what the referees do. As you saw yesterday, we had two power plays, Finland had a lot, and we still won the game. It's nothing we can control and neither can Canada."

IIHF officiating manager Konstantin Komissarov later confirmed the evaluation process for tournament officials and why that quartet was selected to work the final.

"The main factor of the selection of these officials has most of all to do with their experience officiating in high-level competitions," said Komissarov on Saturday. "These include Stanley Cup playoffs, World Championship competitions, and Olympic competitions."

Komissarov stressed that an official's nationality doesn't play into the process.

"Their nationalities aren't considered as factors nor should they be, we want the best officials working the medal games," he said. "We are fully confident that with their experience and professionalism these officials will do their job well and preserve the integrity of the game."
:seriously: He admitted to throwing a game of the 2006 round robin to avoid Canada in the knockout round :fulloffuck:

Ahh, Tortorella and his big mouth:

Canucks' Tortorella cheering for Sweden in gold medal game
Quote:

Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella won't be watching the gold medal game on Sunday between Canada and Sweden, but that doesn't mean he's not pulling for a team.

Tortorella told The Vancouver Province he'll be cheering for Team Sweden to win gold when they take on the defending Olympic champions on Sunday morning.

"I hope Sweden wins, cause I don't think Hammer (Dan Hamhuis) is going to play, judging by what's happened. I don't think Lui (Roberto Luongo) is going to play. So, I don't give a s--- about (Canada) right now because they're not playing. I just want them back here," Tortorella told the Province.

Tortorella, born in Boston, Mass., said most of all he hopes the result helps his team when his players return.

"I hope Daniel (Sedin) scores two, (Alex) Edler gets three assists and Sweden wins. So they come back feeling good about themselves because it's going to help us. That's all I'm concerned about right now. The Vancouver Canucks," Tortorella said to the Province.

The Canucks sent seven players to the 2014 Sochi Games, including forward Ryan Kesler, who along with Team USA, lost the bronze medal game to Finland on Saturday. Tortorella said he wasn't concerned about Kesler's return to NHL action after his Olympic letdown.

"That's a tough game. It's a tough one. Especially after US-Canada, to lose that game and come back the next day and play. I'm not trying to make any excuses. I don't even want to get involved in it. But if I know Kes, he's a horse. He'll be ready to play," Tortorella promised the Province.

Tortorella says it's Sedin and Edler that he's more concerned about seeing lose.

"It's the other two guys (Edler and Daniel). Those are important guys for us that we need to get going. Danny has played well. I watched Edler make a couple really nice offensive plays on some highlights. That Alfredsson goal he made a nice play. I hope they fill the net and feel great about themselves," Tortorella told the Province.

Tortorella was an assistant coach for the United States at Vancouver 2010, when the team won silver after an overtime loss to Canada.

So stay up or wake up?

Torts = Canucks first attitude = I'm okay with it.

Be tired enough to sleep at 9pm, then wake up. Chances of ripping it DT after gold medal = high.

KESSSSSSLER!

I see nothing wrong with what Torts said in that statement. He is the coach of our team, of course he cares more about how it will affect the Canucks upon their return.

Ronin 02-22-2014 03:49 PM

I'm cool with what Torts said. Just like I was cool with Kesler hating Canada. They aren't Canadian. Their only tie to this country is that they're paid to play here. They may be loyal to Vancouver but they have no obligation to cheer for Canada or even like Canada.

Torts has it right. No bullshit. All business.

I will just nap as usual. Sleep is overrated. Power napping is where it's at. 4 to 5 hours of contiguous sleep then two one hour or so naps in between.

PeanutButter 02-22-2014 04:39 PM

From the evidence presented to us in school, it shows that a minimum of 4 REM cycles for adults (at least ~7 hours) during sleep is the optimal amount of REM cycles needed to maintain brain health. Especially for optimal cognitive ability.

I know REM isn't where the brain relaxes and starts to regenerate, but they use REM cycles because four REM cycles guarantees enough time in deep sleep.

Anyone else notice how much jewelry the female hockey payers wear?

I was surprised that any jewelry was allowed at all. Marie-Philip Poulin was wearing 3 earrings, a necklace, rings and a bracelet in the gold medal game.

Just watched mens USA vs FIN

Teemu's post-game interview... :tears:

Ronin 02-22-2014 06:46 PM

I spent a couple days in Helsinki this past summer. Those people love hockey. Knowing I'm from Canada, they were eager to talk about Selanne and other heroes like Saku Koivu, Janne Niinimaa and Jyrki Lumme. I told them how much of a Sami Salo fan I am.

Yup, Jimmy Pattison perfected it. Dude is up when it counts - understanding the importance of time zones and adjusting to it.
