I guess it would depend on how long you're unemployed and your assets at the time of the filing. Again, it comes down to an equitable distribution of assets, so as long as you can prove that your period of unemployment put you in a lesser financial situation than your ex, then you might be able to keep a larger share of the joint assets.

All of this is theoretical of course. I think instead of thinking of hypothetical situations, it's best to mitigate any future losses by marrying someone who is roughly equal in life goals, values, status, education, and future earning power. Housewife types may be ideal to some here on RS, but experience has shown otherwise if things go south.

The sad thing is that and the end of the day your lawyer fees will rape you. The best thing to do is to educate yourself. Consider representing yourself as we'll. unless you have money to spend on a lawyer.......

Yes one of the best things you can do is educate yourself. This will save you time when you do actually see a lawyer.

But don't make the mistake of thinking you can represent yourself especially when it is anything but a straightforward divorce where everyone agrees. Your lawyer is trained and has studied and will have practiced in that area of law and has expertise that a layperson does not have. Self representation is similar to self diagnosis without seeing a doctor which can be dangerous.

once u lawyer up remember to stay tough, i would know this very well as i come from a divorce family & whats worst is my dad was divorvce twice (i have 2 half siblings)

my dad did nothing wrong besides my mom being jealous & "not getting that feeling anymore" (i was less then 10yrs old)

the second time was cuz my dad was poor & hit rock bottom, she was bitch anyways

long story short my dad always got the short end of the stick period, i never saw my mom after divorce (she got most of the things) & my dads ex-bitch took everything & i still have to be a cheap ass hole just to help my dad

canadian law sucks period

Dont mean to threadjack but I have a question from reading this thread.

If a man committed adultery, the woman was a housewife and kids are involved and the man and woman want a divorce. The man has EVERYTHING stacked against him in court.....right?

If this man has nothing to lose (no property, little to no income), then what can he lose?

His kids? Respect?

That's not the reason why a lot of guys are single.

Plus, just because you're not married doesn't mean you're dodging a bullet. If you've been living together, unmarried for at least a year, I think she gets the same rights as someone who's married.

Say even if the dude did adultery, that shouldn't matter in the eye of the courts right? A previous poster said that the Candia courts are a no fault divorce court.

Again, divorce involves the division of financial assets in this country. I feel sorry for your dad (and you), but hindsight indicates that he shouldn't have shacked up with women who offered nothing financially.
