Reliable sedan for ~20k?

Hi there, friend just sold her car and is looking for something reliable 4 door for around the 20k or lower mark. Car will be driven often around 60 km a day so the more fuel efficient would be better. Some things she had in mind were like a civic, acura csx, lexus is. Are there any other recommendations or input on these cars?
thanks!

the base jetta's can be reliable, if she follows regular maintenance.

The new Corolla S is not too bad looking for the price.

I like the 2014 Mazda 3 a lot, probably best driving car in it's class with incredible fuel economy and a premium feel

The Corolla is obviously a popular choice and the new one is quite nice and is feature packed at the lower LE level, kinda meh to drive around town but pretty comfortable on the highway, bulletproof reliability/cheap maintenance and insurance/solid resale value

Used? New?

Sedan? HatchBack?

AWD? RWD? FWD?

Such a vague request, there are hundreds of car which if maintained will keep going long after most people will ever keep them.

TDI. All the economical benefits of a hybrid with none of the drawbacks.

If she's not a "car person", Corolla is best. Legitly one of the more reliable cars out there, decent features for the price, cheap to insure and cheap to maintain with good fuel economy.

That being said, it's got about as much personality as a kitchen appliance. But according to your criteria that's really all your friend needs

Wouldn't recommend it. I own one and it's not too great on gas and requires premium
I'd vote for a VW tdi

Blows my mind how they're cheap to insure with the amount of C-Lai Corolla accidents that occur.

Mostly because they might as well be constructed of plywood and cardboard, they are so cheap to fix...
