interested in the "hundreds of channels" and that remote offered with Roku though

only $20 more then the chromecast.

i heard google finally did the right thing and released a beta for mobile to cast from chrome.
people say it's slow and buggy but at least it's a start.

I'm using a Chromecast with Plex media server and Plex app for iOS to stream content from my computer. Great solution, Plex is amazing, awesome interface, easy to use, metadata and covers are nice. I have the Chromecast connected to a TV that also has an Apple TV which we only use for the occasional Airplay and dedicated Netflix (no phone/tablet app required, great for guests and kids).

If not for airplay then a roku 3 is probably the best overall media box. I have a need for plex and dedicated Netflix in another room, might just pick up a roku streaming stick when it releases at best buy. From the early reviews it seems like a great product and better value compared to the chromecast but a bit slow compared to the roku 3 (streaming stick takes a full minute to launch/load netflix app).

Use both on the same tv or stream to both devices at the same time?

Roku does almost everything the chromecast does and more, also has it's own interface and remote so you don't rely on your phone/tablet to do everything.

both on the same tv, if someone is indecisive.

also, amazon released their own streaming device today, but not sure if available for canada.

GLOW 04-02-2014 10:08 AM

i just saw it on the .com website. amazon fireTV $99 usd

Gh0stRider 04-02-2014 10:25 AM

btw

The Amazon Appstore for Android has dropped the price of Plex, the popular media server software, down to just $0.99. As a pricing comparison, it carries a list price of $4.99, which both Google Play and the iTunes App Store are currently charging. It could be a coincidence, but it’s worth noting that this discounted rate popped up on the Amazon App Store on the same day its set to unveil its long-awaited streaming media player. Plex recently added Chromecast support for all iOS and Android users. There’s no word on when this promotion will end so get downloading!

Gh0stRider 04-02-2014 12:26 PM

Yep you can use both, just need more hdmi ports. Heck you could run a different box or stick in each port.

I'm waiting to see how the new roku stick fairs, I'm liking the chromecast but find the lack of a dedicated remote annoying. Sometimes I start casting a video and then switch apps but late on need to pause the video IMMEDIATELY... Not so easy to do, I have to switch apps on my phone and stop the cast. The odd time the app doesn't think it's casting anymore so you have to restart the video and recast it and then stop it to finally stop the video on the tv. Any one else having these issues?

The new amazon box looks awesome. I get there's a plex app in the works, I'm curious about the gaming too. I recently cancelled my US amazon prime membership with included access to their library. I don't think the box is launching in canada yet since the cad prime doesn't offer the same streaming service right???

Would this work if I streamed a video and casted it over to my TV?

Sorry what's your question dude? If you can stream a vid in a browser and cast to your chromecast? If so from what device?

On PC/Mac using chrome you can cast any video stream or site using chrome tab mirroring.

On iOS you can only cast from supported apps, YouTube Netflix Plex... I don't have an android so I'm not sure of the same is true.

FYI beaming from Plex app for iOS to AppleTV via Airplay works great. Good quality video and no lag if your wireless connection is excellent. Also you can play, pause, fast forward and rewind with the physical apple remote.

amazon.com has the chromecast for $30.

Vansterdam 04-06-2014 01:28 PM

so I finally figured out how to use that Plex stuff and I must say its pretty awesome with Chromecast.

its exactly what I was looking for in terms of watching movies and other video files through my chrome browser/chromecast/TV

Not worth buying the US with the current exchange rate, also you have to pay WA sales tax and maybe a fee for a package holding service. Basically comes out to the same as buying it on Amazon.ca, unless you end up paying duty on it coming back then its more.

I spent the past couple days comparing the new Roku streaming stick to the Chromecast and Apple TV. The Roku stick is going back and I'm keeping the Apple TV in my living room and Chromecast in my bedroom. I’m sure a lot of the performance issues with the Roku stick are addressed with the much faster Roku 3. The Roku 3 also has an IR receiver (works with universal remotes), ethernet/usb/sd-card ports, a headphone jack on remote (great for late night viewing), and motion control remote for gaming (not a plus for me but it does come with Angry Birds).

Apple TV - favourite box
+ great interface, fast/responsive, wakes quickly from sleep (no need to power off)
+ lots of built in apps so i don't always need a phone/tablet (great for kids/guests)
+ works with logitech harmony remote
+ works with plex media server (must have plex app on iphone/ipad)
+ works with itunes home sharing & airplay
+ full screen mirroring or extended display (mac only)
+ can play/pause fwd/rwd streaming using remote control
- streaming/mirroring doesn't work with android (its ok we are an all apple household)

Chromecast - best budget option if you can live without a remote
+ super cheap & small
+ powers on quickly
+ can draw power from TV USB port
+ works with mac/win and android/ios
+ works with plex media server (must have plex app)
+ browser tab & screening mirroring with chrome browser
- no physical remote control (possible delays in pausing or stoping casts)
- no built in apps (always need phone/tablet)

Roku Streaming Stick - crippled bastard of the mighty Roku 3
+ cheap & small
+ can draw power from TV USB port
+ works with plex media server (no app required !!!)
+ hundreds of built in apps/channels
+ loads of free content
+ can cast from netflix/youtube apps
+ comes with physical remote (RF connection, no line of sight required)
- doesn’t work with logitech harmony remote
- no screen mirroring from computer or mobile device
- very slow powering on (maybe better to use AC adapter and leave on 24/7 ???)
- apps a bit slow to load, (Netflix is really bad)
- interface is a bit slow, also not aesthetically pleasing
