Box 2 VI

Hello, i just got pulled over a few days ago, with the police officer giving me a Box 2 VI for

- Horn not working
- Window not working
- Exhaust too big

And then he tells me that I "MUST" Bring it to Nissan dealership. I called every nissan dealership they said they do not do Box 2 VI for the Right hand Drive vehicle that im driving (180sx). So right now im a bit confused. They cannot force me to take it to nissan. If i cannot take it to nissan, is there a shop where i can take it to get it VI for my 180sx??

Take your car to an authorized inspection station and they will inspect it and tell you if it passes or fails. If it passes, they will forward the paperwork to the MVB, issue you a copy of the inspection report showing it passed & stick a sticker on your windshield. If it does not pass they will advise you what you need to do to make it pass.

I had my JDM import inspected & passed and it didn't need to go to any special inspection station. Your car needs to meet the BC Provincial standards for you to be able to drive on the road. I had to do light and reflector mods to mine and the mechanical stuff is the same for any car.

They always do that for some reason. My friend was instructed to take his '92 RHD RX7 to a Mazda dealership to have it inspected after a neighbour called 911 about his exhaust

Just a hollow bluff to try and get you to think you can't take it to a small independent shop who might be more lenient.

Yea he did, but our friend's dad was the manager of the one he took it to so they made an exception for him. Iirc all he had to fix was putting his stock exhaust back on and DRLs.

My brother had a VI with his RHD FC, he took it to a small shop and had zero issues with having his VI done there.

they do that because there is a space where the police officer can fill in where to take it. I assume it is better to write in a shop than leave it blank.

EDIT: Another reason why they fill out the blank is because it only makes sense to bring the car to its respective dealership, or a generic place like Canadian Tire. I don't know about traffic folks, but I was never provided with a list of designated shops. As zulu said, you can bring it to any authorized inspection location.

yeah, thats a fail.. u need a cat, exhaust tip cant be larger than the rest of the pipe "unless factory" treadware is a concern, they will check everything mechanical like axles and bushings. even just a lightbulb can fail you..

What, that works? My neighbour has a loud exhaust and he likes revving it and also sometimes turns on the car for a long time (like an hour) and then turn it off. It's really annoying. He also does this at the weirdest hours. One time, it was like 630 in the morning or something. I've called the non-emergency number before but the guy's gone or has turned off his car already when they do arrive. I even told the lady his exhaust was really loud and he has front tinted windows, and she said the police can't do anything unless they catch him driving.

She also said to call if he idles more than 3 minutes and then they can start talking to him and looking at his car and stuff because they'll be 'stopping' him for idling too long, but unless they caught him driving it with the loud exhaust, there's nothing I can do. What's worse is he parks right in front of my house instead of across the street in front of his house.

I don't know about traffic folks, but I was never provided with a list of designated shops. As zulu said, you can bring it to any authorized inspection location.

The MV Act used to be worded that it was possible for the Police to designate a particular Inspection station if they wanted, but the wording has been changed and now it can be inspected at any authorized station. if you do get a "defective" inspection at a 'friendly' shop, Police can re-order another inspection though if you get caught.

Notifications and orders

25.08 (1) Despite an inspection certificate being in force, the director or a peace officer may, on having reasonable and probable grounds to believe that a vehicle may not comply with the standards, notify the owner or operator of a vehicle to present it for inspection to a designated inspection facility within the period set out in the notification.

The $598 VT will be for 'disobeying a Peace Officer's Conditional (box 2)/...or Condemned vehicle order (#1). The inspector can be fined $345 and have his inspection licence cancelled.

rcmp showed up and asked me to start the car while it was backed into my carport on private property.. then gave me a box 2 for the sound level...

i found this odd, because of course its going to be loud 1-2 feet away from a cement retaining wall in a covered carport...

So your exhaust is no louder than a stock one & you have no other mods? Just curious?

When did the MVA wording change to rid the option of designated an inspection facility?

I realize this is BC laws and not a fresh edition of the MVAR, but does this no longer stand?

"Inspection of motor vehicles

7.08 The owner or the person in charge of a motor vehicle or trailer operated, or about to be operated, on any highway shall, upon the request of any peace officer, forthwith take the motor vehicle or trailer to the place designated by the peace officer and submit the motor vehicle or trailer there for inspection and testing.

no, it was louder, i'm not saying i didn't deserve it. i just think the circumstances were stacked unfairly against me from the start.

There was considerable discussion on this here a few years back and I believe Rich can direct you to the sections he used to say that Police had no authority to designate the exact inspection station.

Why the hell should I take my 1980-something Porsche to an official Porsche dealer across town and pay $180/hr labor + cost+200% on parts when I can take it to an independent euro specialist shop down the block THAT IS ALSO A DESIGNATED INSPECTION FACILITY and only about $95/hr labor + cost+15% on parts???? It's a bit of a stretch, but section 7 of the Charter of Rights does give us the right to liberty and personal choice, I would not want that right compromised in order to enforce a relatively minor MVA offense.

But I'm being a hypocrite. I would support a police officer using excessive force during arrest of a child molester or rapist, but don't you dare tell me I have to get my car inspected at Canadian Tire!!!

And, I love the sound of a proper race car, but if your street car is louder than my RACE CAR, and makes less power, you deserve a VI and I don't care if you're told to take it to Canadian Tire.. your car wakes up my sleeping baby!!!

Box 2 = DESIGNATED INSPECTION FACILITY

Ignore whatever you've been told.

Just out of curiosity OP, how did the PO even figure out you didn't have a working horn?

And that is why I find the guy who parks in front of my house so annoying. His exhaust is just as loud as mine when I was in my younger years, but I always turned on the car and left. I never let it sit idle or rev it constantly.

To make matters worse, he absolutely sucks at parking. It takes him a few minutes to parallel park in a spot that's twice the length of his car. At least he doesn't just move his car forward and backwards in a parking spot like he used to when he first got the car. I think he was learning how to drive and was getting used to the clutch so he'd actually drive forward a few feet and then go back and forth basically.
