Need a unique joint to go to

Looking for an unique joint to go to.

Place i've been to:
1) Maenam (tad expensive and small portions). Westernized viet / thai. wasn't that impressed
2) Rajio Social was great both times I was there, but looking for some place else
3) Oakwood Bistro was great, been there 3 times, awesome everytime.
4) Burdock & Co. small place, hole in the wall (not really), great menu (except the ramen)
5) Grub: decent place, but i found it tad expensive but still a great place.

looking for some place that's like a hole in the wall, not main stream for 4 people, double date type of place. I was thinking of the acron but not a fan of vegetarian.

if you can't refer me to any, anyone been those below?

Peartree?
Le Regalade?
The parker?
Cuchillo?
Smoky Dog?
fable?
Graze?
The emerald?

You probably won't go wrong with Pear Tree or L'abbatoir!

Matlock 04-03-2014 09:36 PM

Ava in north Vancouver.
Small Persian restaurant. Owners used to own lonsdale kabab. Hole in the wall with good food. Really a hole in the wall. Perfectly cooked meat. Not expensive. Huge portions

If you want to spend a bit more, I liked fable.

Didn't care for peartree

6793026 04-03-2014 09:36 PM

Thanks man. L'abbatoir is really good but sort of pretty well known so i want some place where people haven't possibly been before. West, Blue Water, Le Croc, pierre a tard, le flux borguir are all out.

Pear tree is too fine dining, but yes, i saw their menu, pretty epic.

anyone been to Mamie taylors?

sonick 04-03-2014 09:40 PM

Cuchillo is overpriced. I've heard bad things about The Emerald. Fable is pretty awesome. Heard mixed reviews about Mamie Taylor's

Just spitballing...

Les Faux Bourgeois (oops posted before you replied)
Abigail's Party
Irish Heather
Alibi Room (especially if you all like beer)
Ask for Luigi

yeah i heard their brunch at The Emerald really sucks shit.

I'm thinking Fable and graze would be interesting. Mamie Taylor's would be interesting cause if the food sucks, we can hop across the street (Phemon)

Abigail's Party is a great contender since the last time i was there was like 10 yrs ago.
Irish Heather: great one... i might go to this one again, it does have it's charm cause worse comes to worse, i cna hop to elsewhere close by.
Alibi Room: too pub food.
Ask for Luigi: could be a decent italian joint, tad fancy but would consider.

You should totally go to Lion Den's Cafe on fraser street, off kingsway.
It was a great experience when i went with my group, one of a kind place for sure!

I realize you've considered and dismissed it but I will attest to The Acorn being excellent. The dishes are very hearty and flavourful. I wouldn't expect an omnivore to leave feeling let down by the lack of meat.

Sushi by Yuji, Sushi Kishimoto, Ask for Luigi, Nook, Cafe salade de fruits, Forage

xmisstrinh 04-04-2014 12:25 PM

+1 for Ask For Luigi (get the pate campagnola :tears:) , my favourite pasta place (and in my opinion the best pasta) in Vancouver at the moment.

Also to add to the Italian on the list Nook and Tavola, same owners and the restos are 20 steps from each other. Nook on Denman, and Tavolva on Robson just past Denman where Tapastree used to be.

Salad De Fruits is good but go early or make reservations if you don't want to wait.

The guy kept going on about how ketchup sucks when we asked for it.

Another +1 for Ask for Luigi

So are you looking for a hole in the wall or not becasue some of those places are far from being a hole in the wall.

My current favorite is Tuc Craft Kitchen in Gastown. Fucking awesome food.

6793026 04-04-2014 08:13 PM

yup. i went to Tuc Craft.. freaking amazing place. super cheap and drinks were decent.

I was also pleasently surprised that every time I've gone it was dead. Now mind you these were all weeknights but given it's Gastown I would have expected more people. No matter though as I prefer places to be less busy. Man those bacon and eggs are to die for.
