K done bashing the IBMs. Next laptop is definitely gunna be an Acer.
Did you get an ideapad?? I order 5 x thinkpads every month(yes, our company grows that fast) I've gotten a total of 2 DOA of the 200+ units we own. Build quality always refers back to how well you take care of your notebook. Parts only break easily if you don't take care of it.

ended up getting an Acer Aspire v5 from Memex
1TB hd, 8gb ram, radeon 8550g, only downside is windows 8 but i figured for the price and the specs it was a decent deal. Memex was nice enough to price match for me even though a similar product from somewhere else had different part and sku#
So far so good, spent most of the time setting it up. Took forever to install all the updates before i could update to 8.1.

I gotta say, windows 8 fucking blows, thank god for classic shell. It bothered me to shits not having a start menu and the goddam metro just pisses me off. Everything is counter-intuitive. Coming from windows 7, its such a retarded jump from 7 to 8 in terms of functionality and layout.

I'll see how this holds up, hopefully it'll last as long as the old one

What do you guys use as a permanent deletion software?
And recommendations on antivirus?
So far i've been suggested eset and that's what i'm leaning towards. I had avast on my previous pc but that was kinda annoying with all the little alerts.

You'll get used to windows 8 and with shell on its even better..
I would still suggest norton, its a decent pc so it won't bog you down any internet security suites will do fine (mcafee, kaspernsky, Norton) stay away from the free shit (doesn't do much)

as for deleteing software pc scrubber is pretty good its around 30$

Windows 8 works best on a touchscreen notebook. Basically sooner or later touch screens will be the way to go. I'm currently waiting for my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga to come in. Won a free one for all the purchases made.

sure they wernt the best 5 years ago, but neither was Acer. Norton though has the one of the best protections out there, if you have a decent computer AMD A4 or Intel Pentium of higher with 4gb of ram, you wont notice it running in the background

Lol I had such a bad experience with Norton years ago.
But I'll check it out.
So far I'm running on peer block and Windows defender.
Haven't really done anything crazy...but I'll probably go on a download spree at some point.

Other than the 720p display, it has some decent specs, but it really depends on how you're going to use it.

i dont plan on gaming on it. I will be using it mostly for home and work use. This consist of just basic multitasking, internet surfing and video streaming. The main things im looking for in a laptop is that it wont feel laggy in a few years so specs have to be fairly decent and its durability since i will be bringing this to work 5 days a week.

Would the higher specs outweigh the lower screen resolution in my case? or is the specs overkill for what i need?

IMHO, the specs are great for home/office. It's got a solid processor, decent GPU. and plenty of RAM. I like how the Future Shop page mentions that it's lightweight. It's close to 6lbs! You definitely don't want to be lugging this around on a regular basis.

I looked around some more and found this as well

Aspire V5-472P-6444
Acer Aspire V5-472P-6444 w/ Core i5-3337U, 8GB, 500GB, 14in HD Touch, Win 8 at Memory Express

Specs arent as great but it is smaller, lighter, better battery life, and has touch screen.
From what I know, windows 8 is built for touch screen. Is the touch screen feature just a gimmick or is that the must have feature for next generation laptops?

There's also this model which im assuming is the newer model

Acer Aspire V5-473P-6610
http://www.costco.ca/Acer-Aspire-V5-...100104368.html

It is $100 more but it has the 4th gen i5, bluetooth and a card reader. The other pro is, its from costco so there is a 90 day return and an extended manufacturer warranty to 2 years.

IMHO touchscreen is a gimmick for laptops. I use it about 5% of the time with Flipboard or some other news/ebook reader apps.

The Acer on MS Store has great internal specs overall but the low resolution kinda kills it. If it's for standard browsing it should be fine, but for any kind of web/graphic design work or database/spreadsheet stuff a high res panel will be much more beneficial.

What do you guys think about this?

Lenovo ideapad u530 touch 59401460

Lenovo U530 Touch | 15.6" Multitouch Laptop | Lenovo (CA)

Its on sale for 769.

From my understanding, ideapads arent built as well as thinkpads. Should I bother considering this?

Went back read through this thread multiple times the other day, and spent a few hours making a decision for a new laptop for my wife.... I know she wanted an ultrabook because laptops are bulky, and I ended up getting her Acer Aspire V7, spent a few hundred extra on the higher model because I really liked the specs, i7 cpu with a 1080p 14" touch-screen....

and I even had the same opinion as Sonick did about the touchscreen being useless before i bought it, but after a few hours of using it setting it up for wifey, I gotta say it's hella handy for those times you wanna quickly do something instead of dicking around trying to be precise with the pad..
I find myself touching it more and more often, it has definitely changed my mind.... and wife loves it too.... now I gotta ask you guys, what the fck is going on with these warranties ? is 1 year manufacturer standard now for laptops ? shit that seems low, and i dont trust Future Shop extended warranty they fcked me over once already... what do you guys do ?

Buy the warranty, break laptop on last day of warranty, pay damage deposit, get new laptop!

^ Razor which warranty are you talking about ?
I just registered the device and I'm assuming that gives me an automatic 1 year warranty...
are you saying Acer offers extended warranty ?

lol im not jewing anyone, I just want a fair shake... i dont think 1 year warranty is good enough for these types of devices, 3 year should be minimum

Ended up with the Lenovo E540 with the i5 processor. Picked it up from memory express along with a kingston hyperx 240gb ssd. Such a big difference in speed! laptop is a bit heavy and thick but overall not a bad purchase.

looking for a windows 8.1 ultrabook/hybrid laptop within the month...primarily word processing...no gaming

8+ hours battery life
~13"
lightweight and reliable...can't fall apart within 4 years

I see the TF100 still best bang for buck @ $350...but a bit small
can anyone comment on the build quality/reliability of MS Surface products? Pro 3 i5 with keyboard is out of my budget and the i3 wont ship until end of the summer
Also looking at the Yoga 2/ Thinkpad 10/ Dell Venue 11 pro

I've been using this beast for:

World of warcraft
Diablo 3
and assorted PC related work.

its a few years old now...but it is a beast.

Qosmio X500-014
Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor 1.6GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology,
18.4” FHD TFT w/TruBrite™,
nVidia GeForce GTS 250M 1GB VRAM,
8GB DDR3,
1TB HDD S-ATA ( 2 x 500gig ). I ended up taking 1 of the 500gig drives out and replacing with a 120gig SSD for o/s bootup and World of Warcraft install.
DVD Super-Multi Double Layer with Blu-ray
1Gbps LAN,
Bluetooth,
Intel 802.11 agn Wireless,
Integrated Web Camera,
HDMI-CEC,
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit

battery life is crap but this was meant to replace my desktop system completely. so it remains seated in one corner of the house.

Buy Acer Aspire V5-473P-6459 Touchscreen Laptop - Microsoft Store Canada Online Store

On sale for $499.99 right now

I would just upgrade your PC and maybe pick up a tablet instead of a laptop. Desktops seems better for torrents as you can leave it on over night if you want to download something big. At least that how I did my upgrade.

Used an ipad air for travel and at home used a desktop.

Maybe is just me but I always game and watch TV shows on my monitor. I just find laptop screen to be too small......
