I love FOtB though. More relateable to me for sure. Since it's still early in season one, every actor is still just settling into their roles. I fully expect s2-s3 (if it gets there) to be really good. |
would wife the mom and live a happy life together with her |
heard ABC dumbed down and toned down the show a lot from his book. too bad. makes me wanna read the book now, has anyone read it? i heard it was very "real" and he brought up tons of issues like asian domestic violence and like... what it was like to be an asian kid, like the dark side of asians perceived by progressive westerners lol. |

Anyway I doubt there's any one way asians grew up, so it could go either way. I'm sure some people relate to the show, and some would relate to the book. To me that part is not really relevant, I just think it's pretty funny, especially the two young kids. |

I haven't read the book but this article sums up Huang's feelings pretty well.... basically he hates the TV show because ABC turned it into just another family sitcom that tries to be funny instead of touching on issues surrounding Asian culture. Things like: beating your kids, expecting perfection in nearly everything you do, "pushing" your kids really hard, and how Asian parents put down their kids all the time. Obviously I'm generalizing, but Huang apparently wrote about a lot of these things in his book but nearly all of it was cut out. ...personally I find there is not a whole lot that is "relatable" to me except little Eddie's love for hip hop lol. But like Huang says, I enjoyed hip hop/rap and some darker rock because it was a reflection of the negativity in my upbringing. Maybe I just had a "bad" childhood but I don't recall either of my parents ever being that nice, either to me or each other. They were more of disciplinarians which the show doesn't touch on at all. Randall Park is a decent actor but the second Eddie asked him about girl advice (in the show) and he actually GAVE it to his son instead of going on a long spiel about not thinking about girls and focussing on school/academics I knew the show had become "too" Western. |
book is totally different then the show imo. Eddie gets into some pretty crazy shit in the book lol, worth a read imo |
