290 homicides unsolved! WTF???

ok look at this, 290 homicides within last 12 years only on the Lower Mainland.
290 unsolved murders on the Lower Mainland over 12 years | Vancouver Sun

and I found this stats
Homicide offences, number and rate, by province and territory (Number of homicides)

the stats is only for the last 5 years, but there have been 95.2 homicides /year on average.

Which is 1142.4 over the course of 12 years, but that's the entire BC.

Say 1,000 of them are from Lower Mainland(which realistically will be less), but even with 1,000 that's 29% unsolved homicides.
(I'm guessing realistically more than 30% unsolved homicides??)

I just thought that the number is pretty high..what do you think?

If you kill a random person and no one sees you, and you don't leave a bunch of jizz at the crime scene it would be pretty hard to solve no?

Haven't read the article therefore I may be captain obvious here, but drug trade related homicides are what seemingly has occurred in Vancouver in the last decade. In my mind, these would be harder to solve than typical domestic / relationship related homicides where there is an obvious person of interest.

Not sure why, but the numbers don't surprise me.

Not surprised at all. With limited resources, investigators have a hard time catching up. I am guessing the numbers mostly involved people in criminal activity. Doubt police care about solving those cases.

95.2 homicides /year on average.... about 4.5M people in BC.

0.002163636% chance of being a victim of an unsolved homicide...

stats look pretty good to me. lol

Even better if you live outside the Lower Mainland. Although gangbangers in the Okanagan probably make up a lot of the rest of those homicides.

Unfortunately... Some criminals are smart enough to not post their crimes on Facebook or YouTube.

if you include in homeless people too, they probably make up a huge portion. they usually go unaccounted for

The police had basically said, years ago, that they don't care to solve gang murders because "only those involved are hit" "once we start to investigate suspects die or go missing"
and they never much cared for dtes deaths either

and when they finally do throw a case together they do so sloppily which means low success at trial

so im not surprised

I bet natives from Prince George north make up more than the Okanagan.

It's easier to get away with murder than CSI portrays, there are rules that you can follow that will end up saving you from a life in prison.

No witnesses, no evidence, no conviction.

Some of the most common mistakes criminals make;

- Using a firearm or blade, blood is hard to clean up, avoid spilling it.

- Leaving the body for someone to find, it must be destroyed completely.

- Clothing worn is not burned.

- Weapon(s) used are not destroyed.

- Doing it in a public place with witnesses, any description at all can put you in the pen.
