Salaried job + weekend job = legal? ethical? doable? I'm curious if there are any repercussions for doing this? Of course the two companies cannot be competing against one another but I'm wonder if anyone has done this or what to look out for? For example, can someone working a salaried position at a larger company pickup an extra job as a lot boy or brand ambassador or front door gym attendant etc? Has anyone done this in the past? Do employers frown upon this? Note that hours would never conflict. |
you should at least mentioned to your mon-fri company that you plan to work somewhere else during the weekends. more of a courtesy thing, but realistically you can just work weekends as u please |
If your main job isn't enough for living expenses, you would have to pick up a 2nd job. Don't see how that is "illegal" as you are just making a living if anything. |
My boss could give a shit what I do on my own time. You've already said it but as long as I'm not working for our competition my employer isn't going to care. |
A lot of working tradespeople do side jobs on weekends all the time. A lot of them even register their own company for tax writeoff purposes. |
wait what??? lots of people have two, and even three jobs. why would you think this is illegal unless they are direct corporate rivals and you may be spilling secrets. even then it would not be illegal against canadian law, but MAYBE the contract given to you from an employer. derp |
I think is fine. Of course it will be very hard for you. I tried it before working 7 days a week. 40hours Mon to Fri and then 8 to 12hours on the weekends. Couldn't do it for more 6months. You basically have no time for yourself. |
it depends on your full time job employer. Sometimes they may ask you to sign something stating that you are/are not taking part in a side job in case there is any conflict of interest (up to your main employer to decide). If they approve then you're good to go (maybe i just work for a stricter company). Kind of reminds me of that episode from the office where Michael Scott takes a late night call centre job selling weight loss pills lol. |
i've worked a part time while doing my salaried job, my salaried job didn't care as long as it didn't interrupt my regular schedule |
this is seriously a question??...lol |
When I signed on with my current employer, it states there that I can't work for anyone while I'm employed here. But of course I know if I speak to my manager the rules can be bended. |
This depends on your employer. Read your damn employment contract noob. |

Calculate the tax before you jump in though, if a second job on the weekend bumps you into a new tax bracket, best to rethink if that's even worth your time. |
^That's not how taxes work. |

federal shown below, provincial varies between provinces. 15% on the first $43,953 of taxable income, + 22% on the next $43,954 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $43,953 up to $87,907), + 26% on the next $48,363 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $87,907 up to $136,270), + 29% of taxable income over $136,270. |

OP makings 43,953 in his regular job. He is in the 15% bracket OP decided to take a part time job and makes an EXTRA 10,000 over the year working over the weekends/night shifts. This is taxed at 22% Are you seriously implying that if the OP works and has to pay an extra 7% in taxes (leaving prov out to make it simple to understand) it is not worth his time? |

i did this,, long time ago, had a full time job with CGI, on bell's account, then ended up getting part time with Shaw 6pm-2am. then a 3rd part-time job a FS. it is considered a conflict of interest (in my case, as bell and shaw compete to a certain degree). however i used a manager at bell for ref. so in the end i told bell to suck as they knew i was interviewing at shaw before i took the job. for $, it made sense. i ended up making around 90k that year. even with taxes. its helped quite a bit. i did that of almost a year, after which i quit all 3 jobs and ended up getting a higher paying full time job. keep in mind u need down time, i was working everyday. for me shaw/FS days would alternate and Bell was full time. My full time job was quite easy so i was able to do it. |
Fuck if I have to work more than 10-15 hours a week I'm choked |
It's all in your collective agreement verbally and/or written. |
