Converting VCR tapes to digital
Has anyone done this before locally? Any recommendations, and also how much I can expect this to cost?

There are some software packages that can be bought at places like Future Shop, Best Buy or London drugs for about $60 that include the necessary software and the hardware required... might be an option if you have the time. I'v used some in the past and they are extremely easy. The hardware plugs into your USB port and then the composite (yellow, white and red) connections of your VCR... Oh, I just realized you need a VCR and you may not have one. either way, it's a thought.

This is the best way to go. My friend converted his entire home video album from a 90's camcorder to DVDs. I think they're called "AV Capture".

You're gonna pay someone else to convert your VCR to digital??

why? it's really not that hard...look at people on YouTube...they upload VCR videos contents all the time.

i had a few VCR tapes converted to DVD from some guy off Craigslist

he was originally trying to sell the converter for $75
i convinced him to do 2 tapes to DVD's s for $15

Just take it to Costco, occasionally they have deals on the service.

I've used yep different software/hardware combos and while it is pretty easy it's also quite time consuming having to check up on it, swap tapes etc
