Acura Integra Successor Hinted By Chief Designer

Acura Integra Successor Hinted By Chief Designer » AutoGuide.com News

Quote:
Acura used to be known for offering interesting and accessible sport compact cars like the Integra (seen above) rather than the family sedans that make up its stable today, but the chief designer of the brand hinted that there’s a return to the automakers sporty roots in the works.

According to Car and Driver, Acura’s design head Dave Marek explained that there’s a plan in action to bring back that sporty-edge the brand was known for.

“A performance brand needs a flagship and it needs an accessible sport car,” Marek told C&D. “Not a sports car, but a sport car.” Marek also mentioned that such a car could debut in 2017.

“There are changes coming, and then there are more changes coming,” said Marek. The design chief mentioned that the new ILX that will debut at the LA Auto Show will show Acura’s strides in a more sport-oriented direction. “It’s not what our direction is going to be, but it’s a step in that direction,” he said. “There are lots of resources and activity going into making Acura back into what it was.”

Acura and Honda fans remember the Integra and RSX as accessible sport compacts that were a hit with tuners and enthusiasts. Todays range of Acura models aren’t as well received by the same group, though the new TLX was on display at the 2014 SEMA show with a number of modifications including a lowered suspension setup, 19-inch wheels and Wilwood brakes on 14-inch rotors.

I'd rather see 14" wheels

with the way cars are built, being so heavy, we probably won't see cars with small enough brakes to fit under a 14" wheel.

I'm guessing they'll make something that's nothing like the old Integra, but use the badge in a silly attempt to drum up sales, since that seems to be the tread these last few years.

Sometimes I just wish car manufacturers would reproduce their iconic vehicles and simply outfit it with newer technologies (such as stronger engines, better materials for chassis to improve rigidity and cut down weight) without changing the overall presentation of it

Such a great idea. It's kinda like how Nike re-sells those old Jordans and people still buy them. Toyota did a good job with the cruiser because they updated it with safety features (airbags, abs, etc) but didn't really mess with the forumla.

Honda/Acura would make a bunch of money if they re-introduced the DC chassis with the JDM front end. The R&D is already there, and with 20 years of technological improvement it shouldn't be too difficult to incorporate these developments from the old into the "new-old"

The body styling still looks good compared to modern cars in a sense it looks fun to drive and not boring

Definitely not holding my breath for anything decent. Honda/Acura won't create anything worthy of an "R" badge anymore.

As much as I agree, they'd never do it since modern cars are all much taller with higher window sills and such than order cars for safety reasons.

current cars have superior roll over protection compared to the cars of the 90's

lots of things would have to be re-engineered to meet modern safety standards.

Reintroduction of light weight body shells, simple high quality interior builds, four wheel double wishbone suspension and a simple low displacement, high rev engine formula.... one could dream.

Couldn't believe what one saw traveling to South America a little while back. Really was thinking about what happen if these sold here but the salesman left a bad impression getting visibly upset about just opening the door and rear gate. Gosh, you'd think dressing well would be enough

If Honda or acura were to re-release some cars, but updated, we'd probably see some dumb shit like hidden exhaust pipes, "earth dreams" under the hood, and an eco button. They can't do anything right anymore. Such a disappointment.

Volkswagen sort of remade the MK1 Golf,

Proton is not the only car company in the world producing a quasi-modernised 1980s car and selling it in the current times! This other company is making something alot more iconic though… for Volkswagen Golf Mk1 lovers, you can actually buy a brand new Volkswagen Golf Mk1 in South Africa! It’s not completely the same as the original though, recent facelifts have given it slightly different bumpers and a more sloping grille, as well as a completely modernized interior that looks like something pulled from a Volkswagen Fox or Skoda Fabia. It’s called the Volkswagen CitiGolf.

Actually, they never stopped making it down in South Africa.

Unless there is some small corner where they still make these older cars, we will never see these cars on showroom floors again.

The last time Honda said something sporty was coming, the CR-Z which nobody ever asked for came along.

As much as I love Honda and stand by their products, I have no hopes or expectations for this upcoming "sport car". The TLX was supposed to be a move towards a sporty direction, and even that is a solid meh at best.

I hope they make a new 2 door coupe product as well. I see there are presets for vehicle model's when I input new vehicle in the system and for some reason I see the code SLX appeared recently. Not sure if typo or for reals either.

Retro will cost more for us buyers (like air jordans), and i highly doubt it will happen.
Car makers usually like to add a hint of retro style like the new camera, dodge challenger.. mustang did. They cant sell car to mass market if they just throw in more airbags onto the same body with new leather, digital cluster and a new engine.

there's no way DC2 Integra will meet modern crash standards, their A-pillars are too thin to survive roll-overs
