D16Y8 Running Rich

My D16Y8 in my Civic is running rich and occassionally hesitates to start like its cylinders are flooding. Im doing a tune up soon but I would just like to know what other causes there might be.

Car has DC Headers, short ram intake with K&N filter, and a 3" catback exhaust on. Mileage is around 151,000kms. The car's exhaust seems darker than usual now and a coworker of mine did note that the car was running rich. I am changing the spark plugs, ignition wires, and distributor cap/rotor.

Is he basing his opinion on the fact that it's blowing smoke or something else?

I only asked because excessive smoke can mean a lot of things (bad rings/valve seals/plugs etc).

Take a look at the plugs.

If it really is running rich, changing ignition parts won't do anything to fix that. If its over fueling, i'd be looking at the o2 sensor readings

Are you sure it's fumes? Dumb question but higher-mileage D16s are known for burning oil, even if it doesn't kick up blue clouds (burning a fair amount of oil) it may still burn slightly.

I would only assume its running rich if your fuel mileage is shit. Check the spark plugs, if they're black = rich, they should be a brown color. Try replacing the plugs/wires/cap, if not it may be your O2 sensors. Don't buy the cheap shit, get NTK/Denso (whatever the OEM spec is for your car) and do a ECU reset. Which typically consists of unplugging the car battery overnight, then going on a highway run the next day.

Holy crapiola batman. Start simple. Don't replace a damn thing, throwing money at parts is useless without the right diagnosis.

What is your timing set at? I'd start there, it is literally the cheapest and quickest thing you can do.... Also, are you running 87 regular?

Finally, what is your milage? 15 MPG? 40 MPG? Assuming you calculate it properly (1 click at pumps + trip meter reset)
