Steam Holiday Sale 2014

I guess there's one more week to go, but Holiday trading cards are now being given out when crafting badges.

So, while you wait for the sale, start gathering those cards, and get crafting! Time to craft all those cards I've been saving ;)

The "game" this year looks to be an auction house that'll allow people to trade in their Steam inventory of useless crap in exchange for gems. The gems are used to bid on stuff. However, due to heavy exploits in duplicating gems, the auction has been suspended until further notice.

Did they announce the holiday sale already? People were exploiting the "Gem Auction" thing they were doing so they put that on hold

SkinnyPupp 12-12-2014 03:25 PM

I was finally able to buy within steam, so I can start selling these stupid cards starting Dec 30. So I guess it may actually be worth doing this stuff now? I think I have about $20 worth of cards. How quickly do they sell?

Presto 12-12-2014 03:36 PM

Usually, they sell right away, if you set the price to the last sold price.

The "auction" is back up. You can liquidate all the crap items in your inventory, and convert them to gems, which can be used to bid in the auction. People are also buying up the crap, like wallpapers and icons, so that they can convert to gems. I notice a lot of the moldy items I had up were being sold.

Care to give me a coles note version on what these cards are and what they're for? I know I have them in my account but have no clue what they are.

SkinnyPupp 12-12-2014 03:59 PM

So should I gem them instead of selling them for $0.12?

Edit holy shit the bids are in the 10Ks worth of gems

SkinnyPupp 12-12-2014 04:04 PM

I converted a card into gems but didn't get a copy of CS:Go... was I too late?

-You receive trading cards while playing games that have trading cards, up to a maximum of 3 to 5 cards out of a set of 5 - 10 cards.

-Once you have an entire set of cards for a game, you can combine them, and receive: emoticon, background, and 100xp. Usually you'll get common drops, but sometimes you'll get uncommon or rare drops. The :weed: icon from Port Royale 3 is still going for more than $8.

-During the Summer and Holiday sales, you also get a bonus trading card for that sale's badge.

-Everything has monetary value. You can buy and sell on the Steam Marketplace to sell cards you don't need, and other items in your inventory

-Ultimately, you will have to use the marketplace if you hope to complete sets of cards.

-One of the benefits of trading cards is the XP you earn goes towards your Steam level, which upgrades your profile as you level-up.

-It's kinda pointless, but if you like to collect, consider that itch scratched.

I think CS:Go was for the people that got screwed over by the false start of the auction house. Here's Steam's release on this:

NOTE: On Thursday Dec 11th we had an issue with Gems that meant we needed to reset the Auction and start over. We apologize for the interruption. Any placed bids will need to be placed again.
All Gems created by you have been returned to your Inventory
All Gem purchases from the Community Market have been reimbursed. View your Store Transactions to see the Wallet Credit to your account.
All previous Auction bids have been canceled and the Auction has been reset.
Additionally, anyone who traded away items in exchange for Steam Gems on the first day of bidding will receive a copy of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in their Inventory.

SkinnyPupp 12-12-2014 05:26 PM

I thought today was the first day of bidding.. huh oh well

Presto 12-13-2014 05:30 PM

It's nice having a cleaner inventory. I found a TF hat called Bill's Hat from pre-ordering L4D2. For some reason, it was worth 8 bucks on the market.

SkinnyPupp 12-13-2014 07:23 PM

jesus christ

Presto 12-13-2014 08:31 PM

After trading most things in, and selling stuff that was 9c or more, I've ended up with 13,550 gems, and 12 bucks.

Now, I can either use those gems to bid on games, or trade them in for trading card booster packs, or "pack them into bag" of 1000 gems that can be sold for the current price of 85 cents. Besides getting a bit of cash back for myself, I'm thinking that Valve must be raking in a lot of money from their cut of every transaction.

ForbiddenX 12-13-2014 09:04 PM

Valve makes so much money with their in game transactions AND market transactions.

Look at the TF2/Dota/CSGO Markets and their economy it's crazy. If you know how their money works you can make a good chunk of money.

A lot of items for those games need to be unboxed which require you to buy a key from valve ($2.50) and if you decide to sell it on the market place, valve gets 15% of it automatically and the value you sell it for is money you'll give back to them since you can't take it out.

The useless garbage people spend money on will never cease to amaze me, but I guess it might make games a bit cheaper for me so I can't complain.

PuYang 12-18-2014 02:39 PM

Ahhhhh Evil Within is on 50% off ($33.24 CAD) until Jan 2.

So tempting... really want to sit at home over the Holidays wrapped in a blanket playing something scary hahahaha

SkinnyPupp 12-18-2014 02:53 PM

Do I finally give Dark Souls a chance? :considered:

BTW "MGS5" is available and on sale, but don't forget that it's actually just a demo.

Psykopathik 12-22-2014 07:29 AM

grabbed Skyrim,The Wolf Among Us, and Prison Architect so far.

edit also Walking Dead Season 2! :D

Vansterdam 12-22-2014 01:27 PM

SkinnyPupp 12-22-2014 01:34 PM

I got Dark Souls II.. Not sure if I'll ever play it but I'll give it a shot

I guess I've been doing it wrong this whole time. All my CS skins and boxes get sold as is. :lawl:

IMO getting items is just a bonus. It helps supplement my next purchase even though it's pennies at a time.

PuYang 12-24-2014 11:31 AM

I just bought The Evil Within! 66% off! I was going to buy it a few days ago at 50% off, but decided to try the free demo first.

The game is not bad, but my laptop can only play it well at 720p. Still quite fun, happy I waited to get it at another 10$ less ;D

TOS'd 12-24-2014 02:18 PM

How is Kerbal Space Program? Does it have a good educational aspect to it?

Presto 12-24-2014 02:32 PM

I think it has a lot of potential, but it's Early Access. Paying to beta-test is something I don't want to do.
