just bought PIA last month, so far so good!

Just annoyed that I have no clue how to set it up on my router, i think i have to buy a new router to do it though.

anyone know anything about the reinstall tap driver? Can anyone do a ELI5 on it? I seem to have to do it every time I re connect, would rather eliminate that step.

Keep the info and reviews coming.

I need to learn more about VPN and the different services offered.

I wouldn't setup a VPN on the Telus router, or even most routers, unless you buy a high-end $300 router, as most do not possess the CPU power to encrypt your entire connection.

For example, if you're on a 25Mbps connection. most entry level to mid-end routers can only sustain a 3 to 7 Mbps encrypted connection.

Best bet is to set it up on each device.

privateinternetaccess allows torrenting

perhaps skinny should setup a link for that too.

tested my friends, got 15down/10up on toronto and seattle servers (15/10 is his max speed).

torrents work just as fast although some people report it was slower.

I use Private Internet Access as well, but I find it is quite a bit slower when it's turned on. Still amoung the fastest of the VPNs, but be aware that your speeds will be slower. (I picked PIA because it was reported as the fastest VPN out there).

At least this is what I found. Still worth the speed hit for me.

PeanutButter 01-05-2015 07:41 PM

btw. Private Internet Access (PIA) doesn't keep any log files if anyone was wondering.

If you put PIAs settings on your router then all your traffic will go through the VPN. Is this what you want? Sometimes PIA stalls or becomes really slow and I turn it off. I couldn't imagine keeping it on 24/7, the speeds would be annoying and they're inconsistent.. I only turn it on when i'm on public wifi or downloading.

When VPN is turned on, speedtest is not accurate. It has something to do with the packets PIA sends to speedtest (I am not sure exactly why though), which causes inaccuracies in the up and down speeds.

I was wondering the same thing last year when I also tested the speed and got higher speeds when my VPN was turned on and I posted this question on the forums and that's what I remember the members telling me.

So I don't really know how to get an accurate speed test rating with the VPN turned on...

willystyle 01-05-2015 08:13 PM

VPN speedtests are never accurate, so take that with a grain of salt.

Best way to test VPN download speed is to download a large file from a reputable site that has fast servers like Ubuntu.com (Linux ISO) or Microsoft servers. They will also tell you the location of their servers.

We have an account with PIA now. I'll make a new thread later this afternoon... For now here's our link if you're dying to torrent behind a VPN ;)

Hey Skinny,

I checked their FAQ but my question wasn't there. I'm just curious about 5 devices simultaneously, does this mean that I could "share" my account with 4 other friends on PCs? Or are these devices things like phones, ipad and etc?

corollagtSr5 01-06-2015 12:39 AM

You can share your account. If there's too many people using it though you won't be able to log in. It's like netflix.
