ugh...still remember the first time going to stone grill and ordering the duck...oil...oil everywhere....put the stone in the middle of the table but it still manages to get on your clothes...

tiger_handheld 01-05-2015 08:27 PM

So this is cheap version of Stone Grill?

SkinnyPupp 01-05-2015 09:01 PM

Stone grill uses actual decent quality meat... But yeah I guess.. you basically get a half cooked cheap mexican steak on a hot plate, and you finish it up with a side of the cheapest vegetables you can possibly imagine (frozen corn, bean sprouts)

Like I said it's decent but not worthy of the hype (or the price)

Not sure I agree with this after trying it down in SoCal. It's nasty at best.

The HK locations are significantly worse than the Japanese ones as well. And even those ones range quite a bit from location to location.

Koren BBQ?

jerche 01-05-2015 11:21 PM

This is considered a 'fast food' restaurant? Does that mean these steaks will be fairly priced around $5-$8? If so, that does sound appetizing

Yoshinoya is OK for gyudon too - not the best. I ate tons of gyudon when I stayed in Japan for 6 months last year, and by far the best is Sukiya.

I already miss the Takanomentaimayo gyudon :sweetjesus:

Eventually hated Yoshinoya and Sukiya after a year in Japan. Even late night when nothing is open, would rather go to Family Mart/ Daily Yamazaki for bento boxes.

We're in Vancouver, I'm assuming $8.50 for the most basic meal and $11 for a decent combo:pokerface:

Metrotown offering good food :fuckthatshit:

I never got to that point... There aren't many choices for cheap everyday eating so that's probably a good thing :lawl:

yoshinoya was only for emergencies when i lived in tokyo for 2 years

it was either ichiran, any local ramen place, or origin bento for me

nothing like a fresh katsudon and tall boy to cap the night lol

If it's anything like Teppan Kitchen I am down... that is probably my favourite fast food place, shame it is in Aberdeen where trying to park your car is pretty much a death wish. My hope is that eventually these "teppan" type places will open in DT, hate driving in/to Richmond for good eats.

jaemc 01-07-2015 09:04 AM

My experience with Pepper Lunch in Hong Kong was pretty good actually. Portions were fair food was tasty.
:concentrate: Really reminded me of Teppan in Aberdeen Center doe.

Can't wait for it to arrive in Vancouver!

I find the chains I actually dined in Japan drastically drop in quality as soon as they expand abroad.

Gyu-Kaku OSAKA > Vancouver
CoCo Ichi Curry Tokyo > Hong Kong
Yoshinoya Japan > California

SkinnyPupp 01-10-2015 12:33 AM

Agreed except Coco isn't that good in Japan either

Obsideon 01-10-2015 12:46 AM

True, there's definitely better curry around town but it hits the spot late at night after some nomihodai heh. The one in HK was horrible though.

SkinnyPupp 01-10-2015 12:52 AM

The ones in HK are not great, no... Too bad Go-Go curry is gone :( I ate there so much in Japan, I didn't bother going when I came back and now it's gone :(
