xiaomi is attributed to a longer string of words used to describe the revolutionary army when they fought against japan and the kuomintang iirc the long string of words, 小米加步枪 (millet + rifle), describes the revolutionaries as not having a lot (some poormans rice and a rifle) but doing a lot with it (leading a revolution)
the full name of xiaomi is xiaomi-cellphone (they swapped the rifle out of the idiom) so making cheap devices, initially, also made sense with their name and I guess they're hoping to lead a revolution in the devices market |
