Too bad. Though I rarely ever go to Target in Lansdowne, it was the only place that had toys for my niece. TRU was always out of stock.

only times I went into target (twice...) was to get a target exclusive blu-ray steelbook, it's nice that they carry their US exclusives up in Canada shame that avenue will be gone but then again I rarely grab them

I definitely agree. Corporate guy here for a multibillion dollar firm yadda yadda.

A lot of times, executives can be so de-attached from reality. Especially in town hall meetings that we have internally, some of these executives make you scratch your head on the responses they provide.

When I saw Executives, these are the C-level guys, CEO, CIO etc, plus the Vice Presidents. I remember our previous CEO comparing us to Apple. I just had that face..."negro wtf did you just say, we're struggling here...".

Why not? The more competition, the better for consumers.

I definitely went to Zellers more than Target.

Did they really need to open 133 stores to see if they'd succeed here though? I'm sure a handful in major cities would've sufficed for the first 2-3 years.

I'd have to disagree. There was a huge demand for Target coming to Canada several years ago. It was just poorly executed. If their stores were anywhere close to their US locations in terms of price, selection, store space, I'd be a customer.

But give credit where credit is due. Loblaws did a fantastic job fending off the competition. Their PC Plus program is a winner. Hopefully, having one less competitor doesn't make them complacent.

The Kelowna store is god damn massive and impossible to find what you're looking for. There was a lot of talk about how everyone was looking forward to going somewhere other than walmart or superstore, and target was supposed to be that option. Unfortunately when it turned to reality, stock was low, and the prices weren't competitive.

It doesnt surprise me tho. From what I understand, Walmart has their logistics absolutely dialed. They have costs reduced everywhere they can. It would be impossible for another chain to open, and be as profitable with the same pricing, because they won't be able to keep costs as low as Walmart on the back end.

I wonder what the retail landscape will look like in 20 years. Will stores simply be pick-up depots for online ordering?

Opening 133 massive stores, in rapid succession, in another country.

That shows you how smart the CEO was.

That appears to be where the trend is heading. Save On's has already started an online-ordering website with in-store pick up option. People don't want to deal with the weekend rush and the long checkout lines.

For household items where a box of X is no different from another, that may be the case. But there's still a place for produce etc. Most people will not let joe blow pick their groceries, fresh meats and so on because there is a difference in quality and freshness. So you're not going to see the bricks and mortar locations completely disappear.

The only thing I'll miss about Target is their selection of cards. Hands down better than Walmart, RCSS, London Drugs, and even actual card stores like Hallmark etc. With that said, not a big deal really. Its not like I buy cards all the time.

I really like how they handled their Black Friday sales. The one and only year I lined up at Target was for a 50" TV for $389 or something like that. They had a proper line formed with shopping carts, staff handed out starbucks to those in line, and they handed out maps to everyone in line pointing them to where the door crashers were.

LOL. Reminds me of the Simpsons when Mr Burns buys back his power plant. Although, the Germans didn't reno much.

"Desperate, eh? Advantage: Bay"
