Tune for 94 octane So, I bought a canned tune and didn't realize that I selected 94 octane instead of 92 octane. Now the problem is that I only fill up in the states cause I live so close to the border. Would it be safe to run it on 91 octane or 93 w/10% ethanol if I can find it? or will I be stuck paying for 94 ethanol free up here? |
If your car is tuned for 94 you should be filling up with 94 or better. Filling up with lower octane than yours is tuned for may cause knock and as a result the engine will have to correct that - this also leads to less than optimal performance. It also depends on how aggressive your tune is and how knock resistant your car is. |
Run 94 or something bad COULD happen, running a lower octane could cause knock and destroy your engine. If you contact the person who did the tune for you they should have a better idea than a bunch of random people on the Internet. |
There's a 91 octane tune loaded on there too but it's for a stock car, the 94 octane had all my bolt-ons tweaked for it. I guess Ill just run 91 daily and save 94 for the track |
If it's tuned for 94, then you should be putting 94 in it. Simple as that. With the price of gas dropping/exchange rate, 94 up here isn't that bad, comparably speaking. Honestly, what's the difference between a tank of 91 compared to 94? A few bucks? I never understood why people want to run the risk of damaging their motors for a sake of a few bucks. Put 94 in all the time, and enjoy the tune properly. |

Is this a generic 94 octane tune from some guy in the states or is this a custom tune for you running on BC Chevron 94, ie tuned via dyno or data logs? BC Chevron 94 is pretty shitty gas, equivalent to most 91 in the states. So a "94 tune" on our local Chevron 94 gas is about the same as a 91 tune in the states. http://www.revscene.net/forums/68154...dien-fuel.html |
^^^ that. our gas in Canada sucks. Our 94 is not even as good as 91 in the states |

You are probably fine with 91 then. I didn't see any major differences between a Vancouver 91 + 10% ethanol vs 94 when I data log. However, you should run some data logs and confirm. Consider methanol injection (or E85) and never have have to worry about fuel quality again. |
Okay cool, I'll probably just run them accordingly for now to be safe. If I do get some data logging I'll probably test 91 and 91:e85 mix. As much as i want more power i really don't want to mess with meth injection right now. |
Run good quality 91 or 92 with no ethanol content from the pump and 10-15% ethanol so e10-e15 and you'll be fine. I started with that mix on my Evo before going to much higher ethanol content and it has very good knock resistance. It will be resistant enough for your "94 tune" and alas a side benifit reduce cylinder temps slightly. |
